Miguel Almiron has officially returned to Atlanta United from Newcastle United on a permanent basis. The Paraguayan midfielder initially made his mark with Atlanta before transferring to Newcastle in January 2019 for £21 million, which was then a record fee for the Magpies and the highest ever received by an MLS club. During his time at Newcastle, Almiron played 186 Premier League matches, scoring 23 goals and providing eight assists.
Almiron was instrumental in helping Newcastle secure a spot in the Champions League during the 2022-23 season. In total, he appeared in 223 games for the club. However, his playing time diminished in the 2024-25 season, with only nine league appearances. Now, he has signed a contract with Atlanta United that extends until 2027, with an option for an additional year.

Atlanta United reportedly paid around £8 million ($9.9 million) to bring Almiron back to their squad. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe praised Almiron's professionalism throughout his tenure at the club. "After six years at the club, we can confirm that Miguel Almirón has joined Atlanta United on a permanent deal," stated Newcastle United's official Twitter account.
Eddie Howe expressed gratitude towards Almiron through Newcastle's media channels: "On behalf of the club, I want to thank Miggy for everything he has given us during our time together," Howe said. "He has been the ultimate professional and he has been a big part of some of our most memorable moments in recent seasons."
The decision to return to Atlanta is seen as beneficial for both Almiron and his family. Howe acknowledged this move as timely and appropriate for all parties involved. The club wishes him well as he embarks on this new chapter back in Georgia.
Almiron's return marks a significant moment for Atlanta United as they welcome back a player who previously excelled with them. His experience and skills are expected to bolster their squad as they look forward to upcoming challenges in Major League Soccer.
