Xabi Alonso Enhances Real Madrid's Tactical Balance Following Carlo Ancelotti's Guidance

Xabi Alonso is applying Carlo Ancelotti's advice to improve Real Madrid's tactical balance. Following a win over Juventus in the Club World Cup, Alonso emphasised the importance of adjustments and collective play for future success.

Xabi Alonso is implementing Carlo Ancelotti's advice to enhance Real Madrid's balance through tactical adjustments during matches. In a recent Club World Cup quarter-final, Madrid secured a 1-0 victory over Juventus in Miami. Gonzalo Garcia scored the decisive goal in the 54th minute. Despite the win, Madrid faced challenges in the first half, with Juventus having fewer shots but leading in expected goals.

Real Madrid initially adopted a 3-4-3 formation, positioning Aurelien Tchouameni between Dean Huijsen and Antonio Rudiger in defence. However, as Juventus deployed Randal Kolo Muani as their sole striker, Alonso shifted Tchouameni into midfield. This change allowed Madrid to gain more control over the game. In the second half, Madrid managed 13 shots with an expected goals value of 0.91, hitting the target seven times and forcing Michele Di Gregorio into making 10 saves.

Alonso Improves Madrid's Tactical Balance

Juventus struggled offensively in the latter half, managing only two shots worth 0.04 expected goals. Speaking to DAZN after the match, Alonso highlighted Real Madrid's competitive spirit: "You have to know how to compete and this is Real Madrid's DNA, knowing how to grit your teeth and do what you have to do." He acknowledged Ancelotti's observation about last season's lack of balance and emphasised the importance of tactical flexibility.

Alonso explained that starting with Tchouameni deeper resulted in too many players behind the ball. By altering their strategy, they gained an extra player advantage. "It's about moving pieces and I think we got it right today," he said. He also mentioned that despite limited preparation time, they are continuously evaluating and adjusting their approach for future matches.

Madrid will next face either Borussia Dortmund or Monterrey for a semi-final spot, potentially meeting Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich later on. Their tally of 21 shots was their highest at this year's Club World Cup. Juventus manager Igor Tudor praised his team's effort despite the loss: "I have to congratulate the lads because they stuck to the gameplan we had and followed the strategy."

Tudor noted that facing top-tier teams like Manchester City and Real Madrid provides valuable learning experiences for Juventus. "We went to school against two teams of the highest level," he remarked. The match against City was less significant as it wasn't a knockout tie, unlike their encounter with Real Madrid.

Tudor reflected on whether Real Madrid posed more danger through passing or counter-attacks but acknowledged his team's efforts: "We had a few scoring opportunities too; I congratulated the lads, and we build from here." This experience is seen as beneficial for Juventus' development moving forward.
