Xabi Alonso Expresses Optimism For Patrik Schick's Return In Champions League Match Against Inter

Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso is hopeful that striker Patrik Schick will return for their crucial Champions League match against Inter. Schick has been in excellent form but missed the last game due to injury. Leverkusen aims to secure a win to enhance their chances of qualifying.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso is optimistic about striker Patrik Schick's return for their Champions League match against Inter. Schick, who scored five goals in three league games, missed the recent 2-1 victory over St. Pauli due to injury. His performance included a hat-trick against Heidenheim and a goal in their 5-0 win over Salzburg in the Champions League.

Leverkusen aims to be the first team to score against Inter in this season's competition. Alonso expressed hope that Schick will be fit for the game, stating, "Patrik is getting closer and [on Tuesday] morning we are training again." The team is focused on winning each match and qualifying for the top eight in the tournament.

Alonso Optimistic About Schick's Champions League Return

The German champions currently sit sixth in the Champions League standings with 10 points. They are on course for automatic qualification to the last 16 but face a tough challenge against Inter. The Italian side is second with 13 points, having won four and drawn one of their five matches.

Inter has been formidable defensively, conceding very few quality chances. Their average expected goals (xG) per shot faced stands at just 0.07, highlighting their defensive solidity. Despite this, Leverkusen has been strong at home, winning seven of their last eight European matches since last season.

In these home games, Leverkusen outscored opponents by 21 goals, scoring 27 and conceding six. They also had significantly more shots than they conceded, with 206 attempts compared to 68 against them. Alonso acknowledged Inter's strength, saying they are "one of the best teams in Europe" with a solid squad and clear playing style.

Alonso's Strategy Against Inter

Alonso emphasised the importance of assessing Schick's condition daily as he recovers from injury. "We have to assess the situation day by day," he stated. Despite facing a strong opponent like Inter, Alonso remains confident about his team's capabilities and readiness for the challenge ahead.

The coach highlighted Inter's consistency in recent years as a testament to their strength. "They are very strong, a very solid squad and with a very clear idea of what they want," Alonso noted. Leverkusen hopes to leverage their home advantage and recent form to test themselves against such formidable opposition.
