Alphonso Davies Injury Recovery Day By Day As Canada Prepare For World Cup
Alphonso Davies is still unable to say when a hamstring injury will heal, even with the World Cup less than two weeks away. Canada open Group B against Bosnia-Herzegovina in 10 days, yet the Bayern Munich defender remains uncertain about taking part in that match or early tournament games.
Davies stayed on the sidelines for Canada’s 2-0 friendly victory over Uzbekistan in Edmonton, coached by Jesse Marsch, but warmed up separately before kick-off. The full-back completed running drills on the pitch, giving Canada staff and supporters a first public look at progress since the latest setback.

The hamstring problem first appeared during the second leg of Bayern Munich’s Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain last month. That incident ended Davies’ club season early, ruling the defender out of the Bundesliga run-in and Bayern’s DFB-Pokal final triumph over Stuttgart in domestic competition.
That blow came soon after a major lay-off. Davies only came back in December from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which had already removed a large part of the 2025-26 campaign. Across all tournaments for Bayern, Davies managed eight starts and 841 minutes, far below usual levels for the Canada international.
Before this difficult season, Davies never recorded fewer than 27 starts in any of six previous Bayern campaigns in all competitions. The left-back broke into the first team in 2019-20 and quickly became a regular starter. The latest series of fitness issues has therefore marked a sharp contrast with earlier consistency.
Reflecting on the sequence of setbacks, Davies described how demanding the past year has been, both physically and mentally, while stressing a determination to keep working through the rehabilitation process and not dwell on frustration.
"It feels nice to get back on the pitch and do some running. I'm happy to be home, I'm happy to be with the boys and support them, whether it'son or off the pitch," Davies said. "We just have to see how everything goes over the next couple of days. I'll just continue my rehab, my progression, and see how I'm feeling, day by day, step by step."
"It was tough. The last year was obviously an up-and-down moment for me, with the ACL that happened, with the low muscle injuries here and there, but at the end of the day I think I just have to keep my head down, keep working. I can't let that affect me. Obviously, it was tough mentally and physically, but I'm feeling good now, and I'm hoping to recover as quickly as possible."
Alphonso Davies injury, Canada schedule and World Cup build-up
Canada now move on to a final warm-up fixture against the Republic of Ireland on Friday at Stade Saputo in Montreal. That game will likely offer more clues about Davies’ readiness, though no firm schedule is set. Medical staff are monitoring daily responses as the World Cup countdown continues.
With Canada co-hosting the World Cup, Davies’ condition remains a central focus for the squad. The defender is progressing through a controlled programme and stays involved around the group. Canada must still plan for different scenarios, with coaching decisions shaped by how quickly Davies can return to full training and match action.
