Ruben Amorim has expressed his desire to manage Manchester United for the next two decades. He took over from Erik ten Hag in November, but his first season saw United finish poorly in the Premier League, their worst since 1973-74. Additionally, they lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final, marking their 20th defeat across all competitions, a record since losing 22 games in 1973-74.
The Portuguese coach has managed 42 matches for United, securing 17 wins, eight draws, and suffering 17 losses. This gives him an average of 1.40 points per game. As he prepares for his first full season starting with a challenging match against Arsenal on August 17, Amorim is contracted until 2027 with an option for an additional year. However, he hopes to extend his stay significantly longer.

"I want to stay, I want to stay 20 [years]," Amorim stated. "That is my goal and I truly believe in that. Something will happen. It always does. In some moments I will be lucky. I had a lot of luck during my career as a manager and my idea is to stay for many years. But again we know that the results will dictate that."
Manchester United will not participate in European competitions for the first time since the 2014-15 season due to their loss against Tottenham in the Europa League final. The club last clinched the Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 and achieved their best league finishes by coming second in both the 2017-18 and 2020-21 seasons.
Amorim remains optimistic about bringing success back to Old Trafford despite these setbacks. "I have no doubts," he said. "Because there are some things that you cannot buy and this club has. The pedigree, the history, the fans. We have that."
Amorim believes financial resources won't hinder United's ambitions even without Champions League participation. "We have money," he noted. "We have money without the Champions League... And we are doing everything." He highlighted ongoing efforts by CEO Omar Berrada and others to secure future financial stability.
Amorim emphasised that with a strong culture alongside pedigree and financial backing, United can reclaim their status among football's elite teams once more.
As Amorim embarks on this new chapter at Manchester United, his vision is clear: restore glory through strategic planning and leveraging the club's rich heritage while navigating challenges ahead with determination and optimism.
