Ruben Amorim Discusses High Standards Behind Dropping Rashford And Garnacho For Manchester City Match

Ruben Amorim explains his decision to omit Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from the squad against Manchester City, emphasising the need for high standards at Manchester United. The team's performance showcased their ability to win without key players.

Ruben Amorim clarified that Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho were not injured for Manchester United's match against Manchester City. Despite their absence from the squad, United secured a dramatic 2-1 victory. Rashford has scored three Premier League goals under Amorim, while Garnacho netted once in a Europa League match against Bodo/Glimt. Amorim suggested that maintaining high standards influenced his decision to exclude them.

Amorim emphasised the importance of performance in training and games, as well as players' conduct off the field. "The performance in training, the performance in games, the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with your team-mates, the way you push," he stated. He stressed that setting high standards is crucial when aiming to change many things within a club.

Amorim on Dropping Rashford and Garnacho

The match saw Manchester City leading until late in the game. However, Manchester United turned it around with two quick goals. Bruno Fernandes equalised from the penalty spot after Amad Diallo was fouled by Matheus Nunes. This goal marked Fernandes' 21st successful penalty out of 25 attempts for United in the Premier League.

Diallo then secured the win with a stoppage-time goal, capitalising on Lisandro Martinez's assist and finishing past Ederson with precision. This goal was notable as it was only the seventh time a 90th-minute winner had been scored against reigning champions. Robin van Persie achieved a similar feat for United against City in December 2012.

Amorim's bold selection decisions paid off as his team managed to defeat Pep Guardiola's side, marking Guardiola's eighth loss in their last eleven encounters across all competitions. The victory demonstrated that even without key players like Rashford and Garnacho, United could triumph if they played cohesively.

This result highlighted Amorim's approach to instilling discipline and high standards within his squad. By prioritising team unity and performance over individual talent, Amorim aims to foster a culture of excellence at Manchester United. His strategy appears to be yielding positive results as evidenced by this significant win over their city rivals.
