Ruben Amorim humorously remarked that Manchester United supporters might view him as the next Alex Ferguson if Sporting CP triumphs over Manchester City in the Champions League. The head coach is set to join the Red Devils on November 11, having signed a contract lasting until the end of the 2026-27 season. Before his move, he will lead Sporting in two more matches, starting with their Champions League clash against Pep Guardiola's team.
Sporting CP has enjoyed a flawless start in the Primeira Liga, securing victories in all ten matches and remaining unbeaten in Europe. Despite this success, Amorim expects increased scrutiny during their encounter with City. "Winning tomorrow would be brilliant," Amorim stated at a press conference. "Would I be a hero at Manchester United before I land? I don't think about that; my focus is on winning the game for Sporting."

The coach emphasised that public perceptions stemming from this match are not his concern, as they can often be misleading. He noted that a negative result might lower expectations, which he views as beneficial when starting at United. Conversely, a win could lead to unrealistic comparisons with Alex Ferguson, making it challenging to maintain such high expectations.
"What interests me is to win tomorrow, to have a farewell at Alvalade, then win in Braga and then start in Manchester," Amorim explained. He aims to leave fans and players happy and confident by qualifying the team for the play-offs. The outcome of these games could either raise or lower expectations for his tenure at United.
Sporting previously defeated City in March 2012 during the Europa League but have failed to win any of their last three encounters (one draw and two losses). This season, they remain unbeaten in their first three Champions League matches. Avoiding defeat on Tuesday would match their longest unbeaten streak in the competition since September 1982 to March 1983.
The 39-year-old Amorim holds an impressive record as Sporting's coach in the Primeira Liga, achieving victory in 120 out of 156 games (76.92%). However, captain Morten Hjulmand expressed confidence that the team can succeed without him. "Yes, [Sporting is prepared for his departure]. You heard Hjulmand say that they no longer need the coach," Amorim agreed.
Amorim acknowledged that while there will be changes with his departure, Sporting's players are mature and well-prepared to continue performing effectively. "They are very mature; they understand the game very well," he said. The team is ready to adapt and progress despite any transitions they may face.
As Ruben Amorim prepares for his new role at Manchester United, he remains focused on leaving Sporting CP on a high note by securing victories in upcoming matches and ensuring qualification for further stages in European competitions.
