Ruben Amorim Sees Positive Signs In Manchester United's FA Cup Win Against Arsenal

Ruben Amorim praised his Manchester United team for their resilience in defeating Arsenal in the FA Cup. Despite facing challenges, he noted significant progress and character shown by the players during the match.

Ruben Amorim expressed satisfaction with the progress shown by his Manchester United team after they eliminated Arsenal from the FA Cup on Sunday. Despite suffering a defeat to Arsenal in December, Amorim's squad showcased resilience in their recent encounter. Bruno Fernandes scored for United, but Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card shortly after, leading to Gabriel Magalhaes equalising for Arsenal.

Altay Bayindir played a crucial role by saving a penalty from Martin Odegaard. His performance in the penalty shootout was instrumental in United's advancement to the next round. This victory marked the ninth time United have knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup, more than any other team. They have only progressed more often against Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Reading.

Amorim Praises Progress After FA Cup Win

United have been successful in three of their last four penalty shootouts across all competitions. This is a significant improvement considering they had only won one out of eight shootouts between April 2009 and February 2022. Sunday's win capped off a positive week for Amorim, who also managed a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

The match statistics highlighted Arsenal's dominance in terms of shots, with 26 attempts compared to United's seven. Arsenal's expected goals (xG) totalled 3.22, indicating their attacking threat. However, Amorim focused on the broader perspective, aiming to improve United's challenging start to the season.

"Thankfully the players were there; they fought," Amorim told BBC Sport. "Sometimes what we talk about before the match is not tactical or technical; it's this." He emphasised the importance of competing regardless of circumstances and expressed gratitude towards fans for their support during the game.

Amorim acknowledged that while Arsenal didn't deserve to lose, United deserved their victory due to their determination and control without possession. He praised his team's defensive strength and set-piece performance while expressing concern over player fatigue ahead of upcoming matches.

Looking Ahead After A Tough Battle

The manager noted that facing such a strong opponent required more than just 90 minutes of effort. He recognised his players' sacrifices as they faced fresh opponents who controlled possession throughout the game. Despite these challenges, Amorim believed his team deserved progression due to their collective suffering and character display.

Amorim concluded by expressing confidence in his team's ability to overcome adversity: "Sometimes we have the feeling that everything in the end is going to be okay." He felt this assurance even after conceding a penalty and sensed that it might not be Arsenal's day.
