Ruben Amorim Addresses Manchester United's Performance Issues After FA Cup Win Over Leicester City

Ruben Amorim reflects on Manchester United's FA Cup victory against Leicester City, acknowledging the team's poor performance and his responsibility as coach. He highlights the need for improvement in both ball control and overall energy.

Ruben Amorim expressed that Manchester United's recent FA Cup victory over Leicester City was not reminiscent of the famed "Fergie time." He took responsibility for the team's lacklustre performance. Harry Maguire scored a contentious 93rd-minute goal, securing United's place in the next round and preventing an early exit from the competition they won last year.

Despite replays indicating Maguire was offside, the goal stood as VAR will only be introduced in the FA Cup from the fifth round of the 2024-25 season. Maguire's goal marked the first time since April 2016 that a United player scored a winning goal in second-half stoppage time in this tournament. Anthony Martial achieved this feat against Everton in the semi-finals that year.

Amorim Takes Responsibility for United's Performance

Amorim criticised United's overall display, suggesting they need to move beyond relying on late goals, a hallmark of Alex Ferguson's era. Speaking to ITV Sport, he stated, "We had to believe until the end but this game has nothing to do with the time of Fergie." He emphasised that improvements are needed both with and without possession.

The team lacked energy initially, particularly in the first half. However, their performance improved slightly after halftime with increased speed and better ball recovery. Despite turning things around for a favourable result, Amorim admitted it wasn't a satisfactory performance.

United managed only two attempts before halftime, neither hitting the target. Their expected goals (xG) figure was just 0.04 compared to Leicester's 0.84. This xG is United's lowest for any first half across all competitions this season. Five of their six worst performances by this metric have occurred under Amorim.

In four of these matches, they failed to register a single shot on target during the opening half. Amorim acknowledged his role in these ongoing attacking issues: "The coach is the first responsible," he said. He stressed that when a team fails to perform or improve, it reflects on him as coach.

Focus on Improvement

Amorim explained that addressing small details is crucial for improvement. "It's the small things, it's the big things, it's everything," he noted. He highlighted controlling possession and avoiding turnovers under pressure as areas needing attention.

The challenge is particularly tough at home games where expectations are high. Amorim remains committed to studying and improving for future matches despite current difficulties.

The match against Leicester underscored Manchester United's need for consistent performances rather than relying on last-minute heroics. Amorim's candid assessment highlights areas requiring focus as they aim to enhance their play moving forward.
