Carlo Ancelotti Reflects On Uncertain Future With Real Madrid After Champions League Exit To Arsenal

Carlo Ancelotti expressed uncertainty about his future at Real Madrid after their Champions League exit to Arsenal. Despite the defeat, he remains focused on upcoming competitions including La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

Carlo Ancelotti is uncertain about his future with Real Madrid in the Champions League after their 5-1 aggregate loss to Arsenal in the quarter-finals. Entering the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid faced a tough challenge, trailing 3-0 from the first leg at Emirates Stadium. Despite Thibaut Courtois saving a penalty from Bukayo Saka, Madrid struggled offensively, failing to register a shot on target by halftime.

Arsenal's Bukayo Saka extended their lead with a clever finish in the second half. Although Vinicius Junior quickly responded with a goal for Madrid, they couldn't mount a comeback and conceded again to Gabriel Martinelli in stoppage time. This marks Madrid's fourth consecutive Champions League elimination by English teams, having previously lost to Manchester City and Chelsea.

Ancelotti Questions Future with Real Madrid

Their recent exit feels particularly damaging as they are also unlikely to win LaLiga this season. Ancelotti's position has been under scrutiny throughout the season, with rumours suggesting Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso might replace him. When asked if he had managed his last Champions League game at Bernabeu, Ancelotti said: "This season... yes, for sure. We've made a fantastic journey in the last few years, let's see what happens next season."

This is only the third time since 2009-10 that Madrid has failed to reach the Champions League semi-finals. They were awarded a penalty when Declan Rice fouled Kylian Mbappe, but it was overturned after VAR review. Ancelotti commented on this saying: "To change the dynamic of this match we needed something positive, like the penalty the referee awarded then took away."

Ancelotti acknowledged that Arsenal deserved their semi-final spot based on their performance over both legs. He stated: "The tie was decided in the first leg. We have to be honest." Despite this setback, Ancelotti remains focused on managing his players' emotions and preparing for upcoming challenges.

Real Madrid still has significant competitions ahead this season. They trail Barcelona by four points in LaLiga and will face them in the Copa del Rey final soon. Additionally, they are set to compete in the Club World Cup during June and July. Ancelotti emphasised: "We are in the fight for LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Club World Cup; this season does not stop."

Ancelotti remains committed to rallying his team despite recent setbacks. His focus is on maintaining competitiveness across all remaining tournaments as they continue their campaign.
