Andres Iniesta denies Barcelona President's claim of signing new contract

Camp Nou, Sep 7: Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta has denied the claims of signing a new contract despite Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu declaring that an agreement in principle had been reached with the midfielder.

In a recent interview with Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo on Tuesday, Bartomeu had asserted the club were practically in a position to declare an agreement renewal for the midfielder.

Bartomeu had said: "We have an agreement in principle for Iniesta to renew [his contract] and we hope to finalise it in the coming weeks. We're waiting to continue talking, but Iniesta is a player we want to retire here when he feels it's the right time to retire.

"The idea is that he has an indefinite contract which renews year on year until he feels it's either time to retire or time for a change. We would like to announce it soon, but we're still talking.

"Andres is a player like Leo [Messi], a one-club man and a reference point due to his commitment and loyalty. They're role models for the kids at La Masia and the new generation of players coming through."

However, Iniesta, who has now come back to Barcelona, with the other Spanish internationals after the World Cup qualifying fixtures were approached by the media for his conclusion after the Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu claimed so.

However, Iniesta disclaimed of such agreement is in place.

Spanish newspaper AS asked Iniesta: “Have you reached an initial agreement with the club to renew your contract?”.

To which the player replied simply: “No”.

The 33-year-old earlier in August had revealed that first time in his career he is reviewing his future options and could move out of the club after making his debut in 2002.

The midfielder was linked with a move to his former team mate Xavi's cash riched league in Qatar as well as MLS. Although there were also reports that Italian Giants Juventus can make an approach for the midfielder next season when he will be a free agent.
