Andy Robertson Leaves Liverpool Without New Contract, Seeks Next Club Quickly

Andy Robertson confirms Liverpool did not offer a new deal beyond this season, and the left-back will leave Anfield alongside Mohamed Salah. The Scotland captain wants his next club arranged before the 2026 World Cup, aiming to keep focus on the tournament rather than contract talks during the summer.

The 32-year-old explains that Liverpool, Robertson and staff reached a joint view on the exit. Robertson stressed the decision followed open talks, not rejected terms, and that regular playing time now takes priority as the defender believes recent performances show the required level.

Robertson Leaves Liverpool to Find New Club

Robertson detailed how clarity over the situation has helped daily life. "It means I don’t need to lie to everyone, so it’s a weight off my shoulders," Robertson said when asked about the decision to pre-announce his exit, as quoted by The Athletic. "It’s not like I’ve knocked back a contract or anything, there was no contract on the table.

"It was a conversation we all had. It was a conversation of, ‘Okay, this is what I want to do, I want to play and I believe I’ve still got the ability to play’. I think I have showed that this season."

Robertson’s role has reduced since Milos Kerkez arrived from Bournemouth, with the new signing preferred at left-back in many matches. Robertson has started 16 games in all competitions during 2025-26, logging 1,686 minutes, far below the workloads delivered across most of the previous eight Liverpool seasons.

Across those earlier campaigns, Robertson always started at least 23 matches and played a minimum of 2,193 minutes. Both of those lows came in injury-affected 2023-24. The defender made appearance number 374 for Liverpool when Fulham were beaten 2-0, the club’s first home fixture since public confirmation of the departures for Robertson and Salah.

Season Club Starts (all competitions) Minutes played
2023-24 Liverpool 23 2,193
2025-26 Liverpool 16 1,686

During nine seasons at Liverpool, Robertson collected major silverware under two managers. The full-back lifted Premier League titles in 2019-20 with Jurgen Klopp and 2024-25 with Arne Slot, and also added the Champions League, FA Cup and two EFL Cup triumphs during a highly successful spell.

Scotland will appear at a World Cup for the first time since 1998, with Robertson as captain. The team face Haiti in their opening Group C fixture in Foxborough on 13 June. Robertson wants to arrive with club matters settled, rather than juggling transfer discussions during Scotland’s build-up.

"Last summer it was kind of close and I decided to stay. It was the same in January. I will be looking to sort my future out sooner rather than later," he added. "I don’t want to be going to the World Cup with anything hanging over my head. But as of yet, there’s nothing. We’ll see where the future lies for me and my family."

Robertson’s exit ends a decorated period with Liverpool while opening a key moment for both club and country. Liverpool lose an experienced leader in defence, while Scotland head to the 2026 World Cup with a long-serving captain eager to secure the next step in a club career before the tournament begins.
