Ann-Katrin Berger Takes Responsibility For Germany's Euro 2025 Semi-Final Exit Against Spain

Following Germany's semi-final defeat to Spain at Euro 2025, Ann-Katrin Berger apologised for her role in the loss, expressing deep disappointment despite her strong performance.

Ann-Katrin Berger expressed deep regret after Germany's semi-final loss to Spain at Euro 2025. She felt responsible for not closing down Aitana Bonmati, who scored the decisive goal in extra time. Despite Germany's solid defence, Bonmati's 113th-minute strike secured Spain's place in the final. Berger, who had been outstanding throughout the tournament with 23 saves, was visibly upset by the outcome.

Spain will now face England in their second consecutive major final, having previously defeated them in the 2023 World Cup final. This marks Spain's first-ever appearance in a Euros final. The 2025 edition is notable as only the second time in nine tournaments that a new finalist has emerged, following Denmark and the Netherlands in 2017.

Berger Apologises for Euro 2025 Exit

Germany managed to push the world champions into extra time with a goalless draw during regular play. Berger had been instrumental throughout the tournament, especially during Germany’s quarter-final against France. Her crucial saves included a remarkable clawed stop and two penalty saves that propelled Germany into the semi-finals.

Despite her stellar performance, Berger was disheartened by the result against Spain. "I take the blame on myself. The near corner must have been closed, absolutely," she told ARD tearfully. "I can make as many saves as I want, but that should have been mine."

Spain's victory over Germany ended a streak of nine matches without a win against them (three draws and five losses). It also marked their first competitive win over Germany since they last scored against them four games ago. La Roja are now aiming to add the Euros title to their recent World Cup and Nations League triumphs.

Mariona Caldentey shared her optimism about Spain’s chances of winning their first Euros title. "It's something we have never won," she told BBC Sport. "It's something we are missing, and we really want it as a team." She emphasised their readiness and ambition to claim victory.

The Road Ahead for Spain

Caldentey acknowledged England as formidable opponents but remained confident in her team's capabilities. "We respect England, but we will go for it," she stated. She believes this could be Spain’s year to achieve another major success.

The upcoming final promises to be challenging yet exciting for both teams. With Spain eager to secure another trophy and England determined to defend their title, fans can expect an intense battle on the field.
