Michail Antonio, a forward for West Ham United, recently shared his reflections on Instagram about the year 2024. He expressed gratitude for being alive following a car accident in early December. Antonio was released from the hospital on New Year's Eve, 24 days after the incident. Although he is stable enough to return home, his injuries might prevent him from playing football for up to a year.
Despite the challenges ahead, Antonio chose to focus on the positive aspects of life in his social media post. He wrote, "Every year around this time, I'm asked what I'm grateful for, and every year I've struggled to find the right words. But this year, I know exactly what I'm grateful for: being alive." This experience has made him realise how fragile life is and how important each moment can be.

Antonio acknowledged that he had previously taken life for granted, often making plans without considering the uncertainty of tomorrow. He noted that witnessing friends face near-death experiences hadn't fully opened his eyes until now. "What I've been through recently has opened my eyes," he stated. "Life is fragile, and every single moment matters."
The footballer expressed deep gratitude towards various individuals and organisations who supported him during this difficult time. He thanked the emergency services, NHS staff, Air Ambulance personnel, and everyone at Royal London and Cromwell Hospitals. Additionally, he appreciated the support from West Ham United FC's medical team, board members, staff, teammates, and fans.
"The medical team, the board, all of the staff, my team-mates and the amazing West Ham fans I honestly could not have got through this without you," Antonio said. His heartfelt thanks extended to loved ones who remained by his side throughout his recovery journey.
Antonio also expressed appreciation to the entire football community for their love and support during his recovery. "Lastly, to the whole football community, thank you for all the love and support you've shown me," he added. As he looks forward to returning to play soon, discussions are reportedly underway to extend his contract beyond summer for added security during rehabilitation.
Antonio concluded with a hopeful message: "Happy New Year—and I'll be back on that pitch soon." His determination remains strong as he continues to recover with optimism about returning stronger than ever.
