Arnau Martinez's Red Card Considered Decisive In Girona's 4-0 Loss To PSV Eindhoven

Girona faced a heavy 4-0 defeat to PSV Eindhoven, with Arnau Martinez's red card seen as crucial by Michel and Blind. The team struggled after his dismissal, marking a challenging Champions League campaign.

Michel and Daley Blind both agreed that Arnau Martinez's red card was crucial in Girona's 4-0 loss to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League. Girona were trailing by two goals at halftime due to strikes from Ryan Flamingo and Malik Tillman. Despite being behind, the LaLiga team remained competitive, managing seven shots compared to PSV's 13.

The match took a decisive turn when Martinez received a second yellow card just ten minutes into the second half. This dismissal led to PSV dominating the game. Johan Bakayoko scored PSV's third goal seven minutes before full-time, and an own goal by Ladislav Krejci sealed Girona's disappointing defeat.

Martinez's Red Card Key in Girona's Loss

Michel commented on the match, stating, "The first half of both teams was very good in terms of the pace of play, looking for the opponent's goal. The expulsion was decisive. From there, PSV had chances and deserved to win. In this competition, the small details make a difference."

Martinez became the fifth-youngest Spaniard to be sent off in a Champions League match at 21 years and 194 days old. He is also the youngest since Gavi for Barcelona against Porto in October 2023, who was 19 at the time.

This season, Girona have conceded four own goals in four Champions League games, setting a record for most own goals by a team in one campaign. They are currently ranked 26th in the table with only one victory from four matches. Their next challenge is against Sturm Graz.

Blind Reflects on Team Performance

Blind shared his thoughts after the game, agreeing with Michel that their performance was strong until Martinez's sending off. "The first chance was for us, but we conceded a goal from a throw-in, which cannot happen," Blind said. "After that, we tried to play. It was an open game."

He noted their efforts despite missing players due to injuries but refused to use it as an excuse: "We need to do it with the players we have." He added that they fought hard and had good spirit coming out of halftime but acknowledged that after the red card, their chances were over.
