Arsenal took a significant step towards the Champions League semi-finals with a commanding 3-0 victory over Real Madrid. Declan Rice was the star, scoring two exceptional free-kicks in the second half. Mikel Arteta's side dismantled the defending champions, who ended with ten players after Eduardo Camavinga's late dismissal. Mikel Merino added a third goal for Arsenal, sealing a memorable night.
Despite Arsenal's early dominance, Real Madrid posed threats on counter-attacks. Vinicius Junior narrowly missed curling his shot wide, while Kylian Mbappe couldn't beat David Raya. Arsenal appeared more composed, especially with Bukayo Saka back in action. Thibaut Courtois kept Madrid level at halftime by saving Rice's header and blocking Gabriel Martinelli's rebound attempt.

The breakthrough came 13 minutes into the second half when Rice curled a stunning free-kick around the wall from nearly 30 yards out. Arsenal failed to double their lead immediately as Courtois denied Martinelli and Merino, while David Alaba and Jude Bellingham made crucial goal-line clearances. However, Rice soon delivered another spectacular free-kick from closer range, finding the top-right corner again.
Rice's performance was historic as he became only the fifth player to score two direct free-kicks in a single Champions League match. He joined an elite group alongside Rivaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Hakim Ziyech. Remarkably, he is the first to achieve this feat against Real Madrid.
Arsenal has yet to concede a goal in three European encounters with Madrid, winning twice and drawing once. They are just the second English team to avoid defeat in their first three European Cup or Champions League meetings with Los Blancos, following Liverpool.
Rice also contributed significantly to Arsenal's third goal five minutes after his second strike. He advanced to the edge of the box before Leandro Trossard set up Myles Lewis-Skelly on the left. The teenager's cutback found Merino, who finished confidently.
Madrid never threatened to reduce their deficit late on and will miss Camavinga for the return leg after he received a second yellow card for kicking the ball away following a foul in stoppage time.
Before this match, Rice had played 338 senior games without scoring a brace or a direct free-kick goal. Only three other Arsenal players had scored direct free-kicks in Champions League history: Alberto Mendez, Thierry Henry (three times), and Saka.
Carlo Ancelotti’s team is known for comebacks in Europe but faces an uphill task to retain their title now. They will need an extraordinary performance in the second leg to overturn this deficit against an impressive Arsenal side.
