Arsenal agree deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino- Why is he a great midfield option for Arteta?

Arsenal are on the brink of securing the services of Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, with a deal reportedly agreed upon between the two clubs.

The 28-year-old Spanish international, who has been a key figure for Sociedad since his transfer from Newcastle United in 2018, is set to join the Gunners for a fee of approximately £33 million. Merino is expected to sign a four-year contract with an option for an additional year, pending a successful medical examination.

Why Arsenal are Targeting Mikel Merino?

Arsenal's midfield is already well-stocked, with Declan Rice, Thomas Partey, and Jorginho all capable of anchoring the defensive midfield role. However, each of these players brings unique qualities to the team, and Merino's arrival would add yet another dimension to Mikel Arteta's tactical setup.

Last season, Rice excelled in a more advanced No. 8 role after transitioning from a traditional No. 6 position.

To accommodate this shift, Partey and Jorginho were often deployed as the deepest players in a midfield trio, allowing Rice to influence the game further up the pitch.

Arteta’s strategy this season appears to continue this trend, with Rice playing a more offensive role. In this context, the addition of Merino makes strategic sense.

Merino offers a physical presence in midfield that neither Partey nor Jorginho can match. His strength and aerial ability could provide Arsenal with the solidity needed to allow Rice more freedom to roam forward, which aligns perfectly with Arteta's vision for his midfield.

Additionally, Merino is not just a defensive presence; he’s also a highly skilled passer who has flourished as a box-to-box midfielder in Real Sociedad’s system.

His versatility means that he could be deployed in various formations, including a double-pivot alongside Rice. This flexibility would give Arteta more options in both domestic and European competitions.

Strategically Adept for Mikel Arteta

Merino’s arrival is poised to bring several benefits to Arsenal’s midfield. His ability to break up play, win aerial duels, and contribute defensively will be invaluable, especially in the Premier League, where physicality is crucial.

While Merino may not possess the same commanding presence as Manchester City’s Rodri, his all-around capabilities make him an ideal fit for Arteta’s system.
