Mikel Arteta expressed his belief that Arsenal were the superior side in their EFL Cup semi-final first-leg loss to Newcastle United, despite failing to capitalise on their opportunities. Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon scored for Newcastle, securing a 2-0 lead ahead of the second leg on 5 February. Arsenal missed several chances both before and after these goals.
Gabriel Martinelli hit the post when through on goal at 0-0, while Kai Havertz missed a close-range header in the second half. Arsenal ended with 23 shots worth 3.09 expected goals (xG), compared to Newcastle's seven shots worth 1.22 xG. However, Arsenal only managed three shots on target, whereas Newcastle had four.

Arteta acknowledged Arsenal's wastefulness as a key factor in the defeat. "That was the biggest difference in the game," he told Sky Sports. "In every other aspect, we were the better team." He credited Newcastle for their two goals but lamented Arsenal's inability to convert chances into goals.
Arteta noted that Arsenal generated numerous opportunities but praised Newcastle's defensive efforts. He emphasised the need for better decision-making and clinical finishing in crucial moments, particularly in one-on-one situations with the goalkeeper during semi-finals.
Newcastle spent much of the second half defending their penalty area effectively. Dan Burn, their centre-back, praised their defensive performance: "We're very proud; it was always going to be like that in the second half." He highlighted their excellent defence against set-pieces and recent clean sheets.
Burn acknowledged that while they have achieved a good result, it's only halfway done. He recognised that Arsenal will come to St James' Park with nothing to lose, making the second leg challenging.
Isak's goal resulted from a deep free-kick by Newcastle that Jacob Murphy flicked on for Isak to finish powerfully from close range. This duo has now combined for seven goals across all competitions this season, more than any other Premier League pair.
Arteta commented on this goal: "I have seen the goal and it is something they do—they create chaos, and it gets to the wrong player and Isak puts it away." Despite disappointment with the result, Arteta remains confident in his team's ability to overcome Newcastle in future encounters.
The upcoming second leg at St James' Park presents an opportunity for Arsenal to turn things around. Arteta maintains faith in his squad's potential to perform well against Newcastle again and believes they can still progress in the competition.
