Arsenal Maintain Hope Of Champions League Final After Narrow Defeat To PSG

Despite a first-leg defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, Mikel Arteta remains optimistic about Arsenal's chances in the Champions League. Key moments and missed opportunities highlighted the match's fine margins.

Mikel Arteta remains optimistic about Arsenal's prospects of reaching the Champions League final, despite a narrow loss to Paris Saint-Germain in their semi-final first leg. Ousmane Dembele's precise strike in the fourth minute, following a 26-pass sequence, was crucial for PSG at the Emirates Stadium. Although Arsenal improved after PSG's dominant start, they were thwarted by Gianluigi Donnarumma's impressive goalkeeping.

PSG have now secured five victories in their last seven away knockout-stage matches in the Champions League, matching their previous 16-game record of two wins, two draws, and nine losses. Arsenal failed to score at home in the Champions League for the first time since a 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in 2016. Despite this setback, Arteta remains hopeful.

Arsenal Remain Optimistic After PSG Loss

Arteta expressed his thoughts on the match to Amazon Prime Video: "It's half-time and we have a big chance to be in the final. We're disappointed with the result, obviously, as we put so much into the game." He acknowledged that Arsenal struggled initially but improved as the match progressed. The disallowed goal by Mikel Merino early in the second half was a pivotal moment that could have changed the game's dynamics.

Merino's goal was ruled offside just two minutes into the second half when he failed to position himself correctly before heading Declan Rice's free-kick into the net. Arteta believes such moments are crucial at this level of competition. He also highlighted Donnarumma's saves against Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard as examples of these fine margins.

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya shared his perspective with Amazon Prime Video: "They started quickly with a goal and they dominated the first 15 or 20 minutes, but after that I thought we dominated most of the game, we created chances." Raya praised his teammates' efforts and emphasized that it's only half-time in this tie.

The Gunners outperformed PSG in expected goals (xG) with a figure of 1.65 compared to PSG's 1.14. They also had three significant scoring opportunities compared to PSG's two, although they took fewer shots overall (10 compared to PSG's 11) and had less possession (47.9%).

Looking Ahead to Paris

Arsenal must secure victory at Parc des Princes next Wednesday to advance to their second Champions League final. Raya remains confident about their chances: "We'll try to approach the game the same way. We played well, we put them on the back foot, we hurt them and we created a lot of chances as well."

He added that Arsenal has demonstrated their ability to win away games and will head to Paris with determination. The team aims to replicate their performance from earlier stages and capitalize on their strengths against any opponent.

The upcoming match promises an intense battle as Arsenal seeks redemption and a place in European football's most prestigious final. With Arteta's belief in his squad and Raya's confidence, Arsenal is poised for a challenging yet hopeful encounter against PSG.
