Arsenal Suffer 2-1 Defeat To Bournemouth As Title Race Tightens
Arsenal’s 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth has shaken the Premier League title race, leaving the Emirates crowd frustrated and booing at full-time. Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott scored for Andoni Iraola’s side, while Viktor Gyokeres replied from the spot, as Mikel Arteta’s team allowed rivals to close in.
The loss means Arsenal could see Manchester City cut the gap to six points if Pep Guardiola’s side beat Chelsea on Sunday, with City still holding a game in hand. The top two then meet at the Etihad Stadium next week, adding further pressure to Arsenal’s response.

Arsenal created very little from open play across the match, despite dominating territory for long spells. Of their total 2.2 expected goals, only 0.19 xG came from open play chances. Opta records show only one worse Premier League home figure for Arsenal, against Crystal Palace in October 2025, with 0.17 xG.
Gyokeres’ first-half penalty briefly levelled the contest, but Bournemouth defended compactly and stayed composed under pressure. The visitors took advantage of Arsenal’s defensive lapses, especially on the first goal, when a deflection and poor positioning allowed Kroupi to strike. Scott later added the decisive second, sealing Bournemouth’s deserved victory.
Recent form has become a concern for Arsenal across all competitions. Arteta’s team have now suffered three defeats in their last four matches, winning the other. That run equals the total number of losses from their opening 49 games of the season, when they recorded 37 wins and eight draws.
The slump includes defeat in the EFL Cup final and an FA Cup exit against second-tier Southampton. Bournemouth, by contrast, extend their strong sequence to 11 league matches without losing, underlining why Iraola’s side arrived in north London with confidence and belief in their approach.

Arsenal Bournemouth Premier League title race reaction from Mikel Arteta
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Arteta did not hide frustration at his team’s display or the scale of the setback. The Arsenal manager criticised both attacking sharpness and defensive focus, stressing that the performance fell below standards set earlier in the campaign.
"It's disappointing. It's a big punch in the face, and it's about how we react now. They [Bournemouth] are a team who haven't lost for 11 games for a reason, they did a lot right. We were far from efficient. The first chance they had to attack the box, it's a deflection, a bad defensive action and it's a goal. That's something we have to recover from. In the second half, you expect a different game. We did a lot of strange things today. We have been very consistent. This can happen; this is football."
Arsenal Bournemouth Premier League title race upcoming fixtures and pressure
Arsenal now turn attention to Europe before returning to domestic duty. Sporting CP visit the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday for the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final. Four days later comes the league clash at Manchester City, which could prove decisive in the chase for the title.
Despite the setback, Arteta stressed the wider picture of Arsenal’s season and the opportunity still available. The manager underlined the need for a strong mental reaction from the squad, while acknowledging how much the defeat to Bournemouth will affect everyone around the club.
"A lot. It has to hurt. The players have to take it on the chin. You stand up and go for the fight, or you're out. It's a big week, with a lot at stake. We're still in a good position in both competitions. It's painful. It's a terrible feeling, but tomorrow is a different day and if we said to people in August this would be our position in April, we would all take it."
Arsenal remain active in both the Premier League and Champions League, yet momentum has stalled at a crucial stage. The Bournemouth defeat, poor recent run and looming trip to Manchester City mean Arteta’s side must respond quickly, with little room for further mistakes in either competition.
