Mikel Arteta maintains that Arsenal's diminished Premier League title aspirations do not increase their Champions League pressure. Last week, Arsenal secured a commanding 7-1 victory over PSV in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 match, virtually ensuring a quarter-final berth. Despite this, their league form has faltered, yielding only two points and one goal from three games, placing them 15 points behind Liverpool.
Arsenal's current league standing sees them with a game in hand against Liverpool, yet Opta's supercomputer assigns them a mere 0.5% chance of clinching the title or falling out of the top four. When questioned about whether the Champions League is their sole realistic shot at silverware this season, Arteta responded: "It's a competition that we have a lot of enthusiasm for. A lot of energy, we're very consistent. Winning tomorrow puts us in a very good position, that's it."

Arteta emphasised that the club is aware of its high expectations to excel and win competitions. He stated: "It's not about adding pressure, it's the reality of where we are and what we want to deliver. We are very conscious that the demands of this football club are to reach the highest level and win competitions, that's it." Arsenal could potentially face either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals next month.
Reflecting on potential opponents in the next round, Arteta remarked: "Since the day we had the teams set out you are looking at the others for sure, and then the ones we knew as well. We know them all because they are so good, so you put in your head, 'what if?' But that's it. You have to earn every right to be in that position."
Arteta hinted at providing younger players with opportunities against PSV: "We've done that when we could. It's always great because they've been extremely helpful and bring so much to the team." He added that giving minutes is a way to show appreciation for their contributions: "When you have the opportunity to any player to say thank you, or give minutes, it is a way of telling them we appreciate what you do for us."
The upcoming match will mark Arteta's 20th Champions League game as Arsenal's manager. His record includes 13 wins, three draws, and four losses in this competition so far. Historically, only nine managers have achieved 13 victories in their first 20 Champions League games; seven of those managers eventually won the trophy (Louis van Gaal, Marcello Lippi, Jupp Heynckes, Vicente del Bosque, Luis Enrique, Zinedine Zidane and Hansi Flick).
Arteta remains focused on maintaining Arsenal's momentum in Europe while acknowledging domestic challenges. The team's performance against PSV showcased their potential on an international stage despite recent league struggles.
