Why Arsenal Could be Forced to Start Fourth-Choice 16-Year-Old Goalkeeper in Carabao Cup Clash Against Bolton

Arsenal academy prodigy Jack Porter could make a surprise first-team debut in the Carabao Cup third round against Bolton Wanderers, as the Gunners face mounting fitness concerns in the goalkeeping department.

According to recent reports, first-choice goalkeeper David Raya is a major doubt for the match after sustaining a knock during Arsenal's 2-2 Premier League draw with Manchester City.

David Raya, who has cemented his place as Arsenal's number one this season, was instrumental in the Gunners' hard-fought draw with Manchester City over the weekend. However, there was a moment of concern when the Spanish shot-stopper went down unchallenged just before a goal kick.

Although he managed to finish the match, recent video footage has shown Raya limping as he left the stadium. His condition has since raised serious doubts about his availability for Wednesday's Carabao Cup fixture against Bolton.

Arsenal's goalkeeping crisis deepens further with Tommy Setford, who was expected to deputize for Raya, also reportedly doubtful due to an injury. The summer signing from Ajax was a regular between the posts during pre-season and looked the obvious choice to start in the domestic cup. However, his fitness issues may rule him out of contention.

Meanwhile, another new arrival, Brazilian goalkeeper Neto, will not be available for selection. Neto is cup-tied after featuring for Bournemouth in their second-round defeat to West Ham before his move to North London. As a result, Arsenal's goalkeeping options for the Bolton clash have become increasingly limited.

With Raya, Setford, and Neto unavailable, the focus has shifted to 16-year-old Jack Porter. The young goalkeeper, who has been impressing in Arsenal's academy setup, was included on the bench during Arsenal's goalless draw against Atalanta in the Champions League, signaling his growing stature within the club.

Despite his tender age and lack of first-team experience, the circumstances may force Mikel Arteta to gamble on Porter for the Bolton match. Starting such an inexperienced player in a knockout competition is undoubtedly a risky move, but with Arsenal's other goalkeepers sidelined, Porter could be thrust into the test.
