Arsenal International Dropouts: Arteta Defends Players Amid Club Ambitions

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta head into the FA Cup quarter-finals against Southampton still chasing a treble, despite their EFL Cup final loss to Manchester City ending hopes of a quadruple. The squad returns from the March international window under scrutiny, after several withdrawals from national team duty drew questions over club versus country priorities.

The defeat to ManCity before the international break was Arsenal's first in any competition since January. During that strong run, Arsenal reached the last eight of both the FA Cup and Champions League, while also opening up a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League. That broader context shapes the importance of Saturday's tie with Southampton.

Arsenal dropouts defended by Arteta

Eleven Arsenal players pulled out of international squads during the March window, with each case handled individually. Gabriel Magalhaes withdrew from Brazil shortly after the EFL Cup final loss, while defensive partner William Saliba did not report for France. Arsenal now hope both central defenders are ready to feature against Southampton, as the club targets silverware on three fronts.

The situation also involved key England players, with Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice missing matches for the Three Lions before returning to Arsenal. Piero Hincapie suffered an injury while representing Ecuador, adding to the fitness concerns. Despite the timing, Arteta rejected any suggestion that players cut international duty short simply to prioritise Arsenal's schedule.

"We have very good relationship and communication with most of the national teams - certainly with [England manager] Thomas [Tuchel] too, said the Arsenal boss. We have been extremely supportive all the time. When you have to communicate the state of every player, we are always honest and a medical decision had to be made. That was clear what the conclusion was."

Arsenal's record in FA Cup quarter-final ties underlines the club's long-term consistency in the competition. The team has advanced from 14 of the last 16 quarter-finals, failing to progress only in 2010-11 against Manchester United and in 2015-16 against Watford. That history adds further expectation ahead of the meeting with Southampton at this stage.

The recent head-to-head record also leans towards Arsenal. The Gunners have beaten Southampton in both of their last two clashes in all competitions, with those matches played in the 2024-25 Premier League season. Arsenal last managed three straight victories over the Saints in February 2004, when the sequence extended to four wins.

Mikel Arteta has also received individual recognition for Arsenal's league form, being named Premier League Manager of the Month for March. Arteta linked that award directly to the collective strength of the squad across a busy schedule, rather than to any personal achievement. The Arsenal manager emphasised results and performances during a pressured spell.

"It means we've won a lot of games during an important and crucial part of the game, so it's a good team effort, added Arteta. It's a reflection of what the team is doingthe amount of performances and games that we are winning."

With Arsenal and Mikel Arteta still pushing in the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, the handling of player fitness remains central. The club's stance on international withdrawals, combined with a strong recent run, shapes expectations for the Southampton tie, where availability for Gabriel, Saka and Rice could prove decisive for the next stage.
