Arsenal Set-Pieces Deliver 2-1 Win Over Chelsea As Timber Seals Victory

Arsenal secure a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at the Emirates, with Jurrien Timber's headed winner from Bukayo Saka's corner emphasising the hosts' proficiency from set-pieces. The result extends Arsenal's lead at the top, while Chelsea troubled the hosts at corners, but Arsenal's delivery proved decisive again.

Arsenal move five points clear at the top of the Premier League after a 2-1 victory over 10-man Chelsea at Emirates Stadium, decided once again by a corner. Jurrien Timber’s 66th-minute header settled a tense match, with all three goals arriving from set plays as both sides relied heavily on dead-ball routines rather than open-play chances.

The match further underlined Arsenal’s dominance at corners this season, with another decisive goal from a well-worked routine. Chelsea stayed competitive despite finishing with 10 players, yet Arsenal’s control at set-pieces, combined with key late saves from David Raya, kept Mikel Arteta’s team on course in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal set-pieces seal 2-1 win

Set-piece numbers from this Premier League campaign underline how much corners shape Arsenal’s matches. Arsenal have scored 16 times from corners in the league this season, which is the joint-highest tally by any team in one Premier League campaign, level with Oldham in 1992-93, West Brom in 2016-17 and Arsenal’s own total in 2023-24.

Mikel Arteta’s side have now produced a match-winning goal from a corner in nine Premier League fixtures this season, more than any other team has ever managed in a single campaign, overtaking Manchester United’s eight in 2012-13. Across the league, corners matter more than last season, with 138 goals from corners in 281 games compared with 135 in 380 matches in the previous campaign.

Arsenal’s opener on 21 minutes came from their first dangerous corner. Bukayo Saka swung the delivery towards Gabriel Magalhaes, who rose to win the initial header. The ball dropped for centre-back partner William Saliba, whose close-range header diverted in off Mamadou Sarr, leaving Chelsea frustrated by the deflection that completed the move.

Chelsea answered through a corner of their own as half-time approached. Arsenal struggled to clear, and after David Raya made a strong stop from Jorrel Hato, who was being held by Declan Rice, the loose ball was turned into the Arsenal net by Piero Hincapie for an own goal, bringing the score level right on the stroke of the interval.

Arsenal’s winner again started with Rice over a dead ball. The midfielder delivered a precise corner to the far post on 66 minutes, where Timber broke free and powered a header past Robert Sanchez, who was caught in no-man’s land. Chelsea appealed for a penalty earlier when Joao Pedro went down, and Pedro also saw a close-range header saved on the line.

With so many chances coming from corners, the expected goals totals stayed modest despite three goals. Arsenal finished with 1.12 xG, slightly above Chelsea’s 1.05, which reflects a tight contest where open-play opportunities were limited and most of the danger arrived from rehearsed set-piece situations rather than flowing attacks.

Discipline became a major factor soon after Timber’s goal. Pedro Neto received a yellow card for dissent while protesting the decision, then collected a red card less than three minutes later for a late, heavy challenge on Gabriel Martinelli. That dismissal left Chelsea chasing the match with a numerical disadvantage for the closing stages.

Arsenal still needed Raya to protect the points in stoppage time. The goalkeeper reacted well to push away a dangerous low cross from Alejandro Garnacho as Chelsea pressed. Liam Delap then found the net in added time, but the forward’s effort was disallowed because Joao Pedro had strayed offside in the build-up, confirming Arsenal’s narrow Premier League win.

This result strengthens Arsenal’s position in the Premier League while highlighting the team’s consistent value from corners and other set-pieces. Chelsea matched Arsenal in general play and from dead balls for long periods, yet fine details at corners, plus Raya’s late interventions, meant Arsenal extended the lead at the top of the table.
