Arsenal Edge Sporting CP 1-0 In Champions League Quarter-final First Leg Thanks To Havertz

Arsenal left Lisbon with a narrow 1-0 advantage over Sporting CP in their Champions League quarter-final first leg, secured by a stoppage-time winner from Kai Havertz. The result ended a tense night in which Arsenal appeared set for another frustrating match, following recent exits from both the EFL Cup and FA Cup.

Havertz struck in the 90th minute after sharp work from Gabriel Martinelli on the left, giving Arsenal a crucial away success. That goal was Arsenal's seventh winner scored in the 90th minute or later in the Champions League, and each of the last four such late winners has arrived away from home.

Across their last six Champions League knockout ties, Arsenal have suffered only one first-leg defeat, recording three victories and two draws in that spell. Arsenal have also gone through in seven of their previous eight knockout match-ups when they have taken the first leg, so this narrow win places them in a strong position before the return at the Emirates Stadium.

The victory also carried wider consequences for English football. Arsenal's success in Lisbon ensured that the Premier League secured a fifth Champions League place for the second straight season. That confirmation arrived on a night when the visitors needed patience, against a Sporting side that had enjoyed a long unbeaten home run in European competition.

Sporting started strongly and almost took an early lead when Maxi Araujo crashed a shot against the crossbar. Later in the first half, Noni Madueke replied by hitting the bar direct from an in-swinging corner. After the interval, Martin Zubimendi thought a close-range finish had opened the scoring, but the goal was disallowed because Viktor Gyokeres was offside during the move.

Sporting finished with 11 attempts, five on target, and edged the expected goals metric, 0.84 compared with Arsenal's 0.78. However, the Portuguese side again struggled in Champions League knockout openers, losing a fifth first leg in succession. Those five defeats now add up to a 0-17 aggregate score, and this was Sporting's first home loss in this season's competition.

Reflecting on the contest, Mikel Arteta admitted concern during periods when Arsenal struggled to turn possession into chances, yet welcomed the late breakthrough. Arteta said to Amazon Prime: "Very happy to win away from home in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against a team that have not lost at home for I don't know how long, Arteta told Amazon Prime. I think the last time was probably in Europe as well. That shows the difficulty of it. When we got into the final third, and we sat there, we missed the final bit. We had to be a little bit crisper, faster, more efficient to break them down when they had that block. We had a goal disallowed, and there were two or three occasions where we were close, but we lacked that final pass. In the end, a magic moment from the finishers win us the game."

Rui Borges highlighted Sporting's display and felt the performance merited more than defeat, after creating several clear openings against Arsenal. Borges told UEFA: "It isonly natural to feel a bit frustrated after the great game we played here against a top-class side, head coach Rui Borges told UEFA. It is frustrating. If you look at the 92 minutes, we had three or four clear-cut chances, whereas they had none apart from the disallowed goal. We just needed to be a bit sharper in front of goal. That's football; let's keep our heads up and believe that it ispossible."

Both sides now prepare for the second leg in London with contrasting outlooks. Arsenal carry a slim lead and strong historical record when winning first legs, while Sporting must overturn another deficit after a dominant yet fruitless home display. The tie remains finely balanced, with Havertz's late goal the current difference between the teams.
