Arsenal Must Embrace Key Fixtures After Bournemouth Defeat, Says Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres has urged Arsenal to quickly move past the 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth and attack the crucial final stretch of the season. Arsenal now face a key Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sporting CP on Wednesday, with momentum under scrutiny.

Gyokeres framed the European tie as a useful reset for the squad after a disappointing league showing. Arsenal know the result allowed Manchester City to trim the gap at the Premier League summit, adding further tension to every remaining domestic fixture.

Arsenal must embrace key fixtures

Reflecting on the Bournemouth match, Gyokeres accepted that Arsenal never reached their usual standards across the 90 minutes. "We didn't come up to our level throughout the game," Gyokeres said about Arsenal's display against Bournemouth. "I think when we scored to make it 1-1, we felt good as a team. We had some dangerous chances before that, and we wanted to take control of the second half, but maybe we didn't create enough in attack."

Underlying numbers highlighted the lack of attacking threat. Arsenal produced just 0.19 expected goals from open play, their second lowest figure in a home Premier League match on record since 2021-22. Bournemouth offered limited pressure in open play but capitalised when opportunities appeared.

This defeat continued a sharp swing in form. After opening the campaign with only three losses across 49 matches in all competitions, with 37 wins and nine draws, Arsenal have now been beaten in three of the last four fixtures, collecting only one win during that spell.

Gyokeres did score in the Bournemouth defeat, registering an 18th goal in all competitions this season. Among Arsenal players making a debut campaign in the Premier League era, only Thierry Henry in 1999-00 with 26 goals and Alexis Sanchez in 2014-15 with 25 have managed higher tallies.

Bournemouth needed fewer chances yet emerged with the points. "They didn't create so much either, but they were clinical and they scored on the chances they got. That's why it wasn't a good result. We have a lot of important games to come and we need to embrace it and to enjoy playing those games. Like I said, it's a great game to have in a few days,so we just need to recover now, leave this behind and make a very good performance on Wednesday."

Arsenal now seek to channel that message into action against Sporting CP, aiming to restore confidence while staying alive in Europe and maintaining pressure in the Premier League race. The response over the next matches will shape how this demanding season is ultimately judged.
