Arsenal End Anfield Hoodoo, Brighton Make History: Four Things We Learned from Premier League 2026-27 Game Week 9
The Premier League 2026-27 season produced another memorable weekend as Gameweek 9 delivered historic victories, individual milestones and further disappointment for some of the competition's biggest clubs.
Arsenal finally ended their long wait for an away victory at Anfield, while Manchester United, meanwhile, suffered another setback against Chelsea after failing to capitalise on a promising first-half performance. The weekend also brought further questions about the title race, with Manchester City dropping points under new manager Enzo Maresca as Arsenal strengthened their position with a crucial victory. Here are four major things we learned from Premier League Gameweek 9.

1. Arsenal finally end their 14-year Anfield hoodoo
Arsenal registered a historic 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, ending their long wait for a win at the stadium. Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute, finishing Declan Rice's low cross after a move initiated by Martin Ødegaard.
It was Arsenal's first league victory at Anfield since September 2012, ending a sequence of 16 visits without a win. The result took Mikel Arteta's side to 24 points from nine matches. Liverpool, meanwhile, failed to register a single shot on target despite creating opportunities, including a Florian Wirtz free-kick that struck the crossbar.
2. Cole Palmer completes Premier League half-century
Cole Palmer reached 50 Premier League goals for Chelsea during their 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. The England international converted a 64th-minute penalty to achieve the milestone in just 105 appearances. Only Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (84 appearances) and Diego Costa (85) reached 50 Premier League goals for Chelsea faster than Palmer.
3. Manchester United crumble after promising start
Manchester United's difficult run continued with a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea. Michael Carrick's side showed considerable promise in the first half, creating opportunities and seeing a Matheus Cunha goal ruled out for offside.
However, Chelsea took control after the break. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring in the 50th minute with an impressive individual effort before Palmer doubled the advantage from the penalty spot. United's afternoon worsened when Lisandro Martínez received a second yellow card in the 63rd minute. The defeat extended their winless run to nine matches across all competitions, their longest since September 1984.
4. Brighton make history at the Etihad
Brighton produced one of the biggest results of the weekend by defeating Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium. Yasin Ayari scored the only goal in the 11th minute, securing Brighton's first-ever away victory against City in 18 attempts across all competitions.
Enzo Maresca's Manchester City registered 21 shots but failed to find the net, ending their impressive run of scoring in 25 consecutive home matches. Brighton, meanwhile, continued their impressive defensive form, recording their sixth clean sheet of the season and winning five of their last six league matches.
The result was another significant statement from Fabian Hürzeler's side, who continue to challenge the established Premier League heavyweights.
