Arsenal Secures Important Win Against Liverpool As Everton Stuns Manchester City In WSL

Arsenal's crucial victory over Liverpool keeps them competitive in the Women's Super League, while Everton's win against Manchester City marks a significant upset. Both teams showcased strong performances as the league progresses.

Arsenal secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the Women's Super League, maintaining pressure on the top two teams before the winter break. The Gunners are now just one point behind Manchester City but still trail Chelsea by seven points. Renee Slegers' unbeaten run as interim manager has extended to ten games, with Arsenal winning nine of those matches.

Alessia Russo scored the decisive goal in the 20th minute, capitalising on Gemma Bonner's poor clearance from Katie McCabe's corner. Russo, who has now scored in five consecutive WSL games, also won a penalty after being fouled by Bonner. However, Mariona Caldentey hit the post from 12 yards out. Arsenal dominated with 2.14 expected goals (xG) and 12 shots compared to Liverpool's six.

Arsenal and Everton Shine in WSL Matches

Liverpool nearly equalised before halftime when McCabe accidentally headed Ceri Holland's cross against her own post. After the break, Arsenal hit the woodwork again through Beth Mead's deflected shot, but Frida Maanum couldn't convert the rebound. Despite these missed chances, Arsenal deservedly took all three points due to their overall control of the match.

Manchester City failed to close the gap on Chelsea after losing 2-1 to Everton. This defeat leaves them six points behind the leaders. Lucy Hope gave Everton a 31st-minute lead with a header from Sara Holmgaard's pass, and Honoka Hayashi doubled their advantage. Although City improved in the second half, amassing an xG of 1.96 from ten shots, they only managed to score once through Mary Fowler's late penalty.

The Toffees' victory marked their second win of the season and moved them up to ninth place in the table. Everton also achieved back-to-back home wins in the WSL for the first time since January 2023.

Manchester United's Narrow Win Over Crystal Palace

Manchester United sits just one point behind City after defeating Crystal Palace 1-0. Grace Clinton scored in first-half stoppage time following an error by Palace goalkeeper Shae Yanez. Leah Galton hit the post earlier in the match, while Geyse was denied by Yanez after halftime.

Celin Bizet had a chance to secure victory but missed after another defensive mistake by Palace. Marc Skinner’s team maintained their strong record against newly promoted sides with their eleventh consecutive win against such opponents in the WSL.

Aston Villa's Resurgence Under Shaun Goater

Aston Villa claimed a vital win by defeating West Ham 3-1 under interim head coach Shaun Goater. Adriana Leon scored twice in the first half, and Kenza Dali added a late goal for Villa’s consecutive home victories this season. Viviane Asseyi netted West Ham’s only goal.

This result marked Villa’s second win under Goater after struggling at season start under former manager Robert de Pauw, who departed earlier this week.
