Arsenal's Improved Form Following Martin Odegaard's Return: Insights From Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta attributes Arsenal's strong performance against Nottingham Forest to Martin Odegaard's return from injury. The captain's influence was evident as Arsenal secured a significant victory, marking their 2,000th win in English top-flight history.

Mikel Arteta emphasised that Martin Odegaard's return was pivotal in Arsenal's 3-0 triumph over Nottingham Forest, marking one of their standout performances this season. This victory also represented Arsenal's 2,000th win in English top-flight history, making them the second team to achieve this milestone after Liverpool. Odegaard, who had been out since September due to an ankle injury sustained during international duty with Norway, made a significant impact upon his return.

Odegaard's influence was evident as he provided two assists in two games since returning, including setting up Bukayo Saka for the opening goal against Forest. Arteta expressed confidence in his captain's impact, stating, "It's not a coincidence. The team flows in a different way when [Odegaard] is playing," as he told BBC MOTD. The manager noted the positive atmosphere among the players following the international break.

Thomas Partey contributed significantly by scoring Arsenal's second goal just seven minutes after coming on as a substitute. He curled a shot into the left corner from outside the box following Arteta's half-time substitution for Jorginho. Partey's knack for scoring from distance is notable; four of his seven Premier League goals have come from outside the box, making him unique among Arsenal players with more than five goals.

Ethan Nwaneri also made headlines by becoming Arsenal's second youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer at 17 years and 247 days old. Only Cesc Fabregas was younger when he scored for Arsenal in August 2004 at 17 years and 113 days old. Arteta praised Nwaneri's bravery and highlighted the fans' support, saying they were singing 'he's one of our own'.

Arsenal dominated their opponents with an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.4 compared to Forest’s 0.4 xG. James Ward-Prowse acknowledged Arsenal’s superiority, stating to Sky Sports that they needed to be defensively solid and take their chances better. He admitted that conceding three relatively easy goals indicated a need for improvement in their defensive structure.

The influence of substitutes like Thomas Partey and Ethan Nwaneri was crucial in extending Arsenal’s lead. Arteta highlighted how important it is for every player to feel valued within the squad. "Everyone has to feel important," he remarked about the contributions from substitutes who made a tangible difference on the pitch.

Arteta expressed satisfaction with how well his team started and maintained their performance throughout the match. He noted that after returning from international duties, there was a strong sense of unity among the players which translated into their play on the field.

Arteta concluded by expressing hope for building something special with young talents like Nwaneri: "I think we have to put brick by brick and make sure the cement doesn’t get dry." This reflects his vision of nurturing young talent while maintaining strong team dynamics.
