Arsenal's interim manager, Renee Slegers, expressed her surprise upon learning that Jonas Eidevall had resigned as head coach on Tuesday. Slegers, who joined the Gunners as an assistant coach in September 2023, previously succeeded Eidevall at Rosengard in Sweden. She will now temporarily fill his role again but admitted the news was unexpected and she empathises with him.
Eidevall's departure follows a challenging beginning to the 2024-25 season. Arsenal currently sits sixth in the Women's Super League (WSL) table, having secured only one victory in their first four matches. Additionally, they suffered a 5-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in their initial Champions League match this season.

Despite these setbacks, Slegers believes Eidevall's tenure should not be defined by recent results. "I feel a lot of respect for him," she stated. "He has been very resilient for a long time." She emphasised his dedication and hard work throughout his three-year stint at the club.
In her new role, Slegers is focused on upcoming matches rather than her prospects of securing the position permanently. "When I got the question yesterday I felt that if this is how we need to go forward then I am happy to do it," she remarked. Her priority remains supporting the team and players during this transitional period.
Slegers acknowledged her sadness over Eidevall's departure, highlighting their successful collaboration in Sweden. "I was very sad because he has been a good leader for the staff," she noted. Their shared history adds depth to her current responsibilities at Arsenal.
Slegers is committed to focusing on Arsenal's immediate challenges rather than long-term plans. "Right now I just need to focus on these next two games which are very important for us," she explained. Her dedication to the club and its players remains unwavering during this period of change.
As Arsenal navigates this transition, Slegers' leadership will be crucial in guiding the team through upcoming fixtures while maintaining stability within the squad.
