Jorginho Extends Contract at Arsenal - Is it the Right Decision for the Gunners?

Jorginho has recently inked a contract extension with Arsenal, as it was announced by the club on Thursday (May 9).

The Italian has been playing an integral role since joining in January 2023. Initially arriving from Chelsea, Jorginho has racked up over 50 appearances across various competitions, marking a significant milestone for both him and the team.

The midfielder has made 35 appearances across all competitions this season. Although he hasn't been a starter, the veteran player has played a crucial part for the Gunners. The 32-year-old's holding role allows Declan Rice to move forward, which has been a crucial component of Arsenal's machinery.

At Chelsea, Jorginho achieved remarkable success, winning the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Euro 2020 with Italy. These victories led to him being honored as UEFA Men's Player of the Year and securing a third-place finish in the Ballon d'Or.

The 52-time Italy international would be hoping to win his first silverware with Arsenal as they are in the Premier League title race this season.

Manager Mikel Arteta expressed his delight at Jorginho's contract renewal, praising his crucial role, leadership, and unique playing style. Arteta emphasized the positive impact Jorginho has on the team, both on and off the pitch.

"We're delighted that Jorgi has signed a new contract with us. Jorgi is such an important part of our team, a role model with great leadership skills and a unique playing style ability which makes everybody better around him on the pitch," Arteta said.

The new deal is supposed to be a one-year extension, which means the Italian is now tied with the North London club till the end of the 2024-25 season.

Jorginho was ecstatic to pen the new deal and the former Napoli player said, "I'm really happy to stay, because it's a privilege to be a part of this family. My family is happy, we are really well settled and there's more to come!"

Is Jorginho's contract the right decision for Arsenal?

Jorginho is not the future of Arsenal, but at present, the Italian is doing an excellent job. Given the experience and the quality that Jorginho possesses, he is a key member of the squad and has shown his class so far this season. The key midfield role that the Italian plays at Arsenal allows their forward players to play more extensively, along with the solidity that he brings in front of the defenders.

Hence, extending his contract by a year is the right decision from Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal Management. With Mohamed Elneny poised to leave the club this season, tying Jorginho for another season is a decent move.
