London, Mar 18: Arsenal were knocked out of the last 16 of Champions League by Monaco on away goals, though winning the match 2-0. The Gunners failed to make the last 8 of the Champions League for 5th straight session despite beating Monaco in the second leg of their last 16 tie.
Inorder to qualify for the last 8, Arsenal needed to score at least 3 away goals, after losing 3-1 at home, the Gunners went ahead through Olivier Giroud's close-range finish. In the 79th minute, Ramsey netted a brilliant goal but couldn't win it for Arsenal in the final 11 minutes.
Ramsey's goal gave them renewed energy and Giroud almost made it an historic night but the French side went on to lose the final against Porto, held on in front their nervous fans for a thrilling victory.
Trailing 1-3 after the first leg, Arsenal travelled to Monaco with their hope of making it to the last 8 Champions League. Monaco had thrashed the Gunners at their den scoring 3 crucial away goals, which eventually made the differnce in the tie.
"We suffered but we played some good football too," Monaco midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia told BeIn Sports after an absorbing encounter.
Monaco, now reaches last 8 of the Champions League for first time since 2004. They join holders Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain, Porto and Atletico Madrid in Friday's draw.
