Mikel Arteta Expresses Pride In Arsenal's Progress And Future Trophy Aspirations

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta highlights the club's progress and aims for major trophies next season. Despite a trophyless campaign, he believes the team has shown elite potential.

Arsenal's manager, Mikel Arteta, takes pride in elevating the club to a level where winning major trophies is expected. Despite finishing second in the Premier League for the third consecutive season and missing out on titles in various competitions, Arteta sees this as a testament to Arsenal's elite status. "The biggest thing is and using the word pride, is that we have brought the club into a position that next season 'you have to win a major trophy'," he stated.

Arteta acknowledges that Arsenal must strengthen their squad, especially after Kai Havertz's injury left them without a key striker for three months. He emphasised the importance of having more attacking options due to frequent injuries in their forward line. "What is clear as well with the amount of injuries that we had in the front line, that we need the goal threat," Arteta noted.

Arteta Proud of Arsenal's Progress This Season

Mateus Fernandes from Southampton found positives in a challenging season, earning the Daily Echo Player of the Year award during his first year in England. Expressing gratitude, he said, "First of all, thanks. I'm very happy, to be honest." The 20-year-old highlighted his growth and adaptation to English football since joining from Sporting last August.

Fernandes also remarked on the stark contrast between playing in Portugal and competing in the Premier League. He set personal goals for himself and exceeded expectations by making 30 starts instead of his initial target of 20. "You can't compare the Portuguese league to the Premier League," he observed.

For Southampton, Paul Onuachu stands out as their top scorer with four goals and one assist this season. He averages 1.4 shots per game, leading his team in this regard. Meanwhile, Arsenal's Declan Rice has been influential with four goal contributions in his last five league matches.

Rice recently scored Arsenal's winning goal against Newcastle, bringing his total contributions this season to nine goals and ten assists across all competitions.

Match Prediction: Arsenal Favoured

Southampton faces a daunting task against Arsenal, having lost 29 Premier League games this season. A loss would make them the first team to lose 30 times in a single campaign within a 38-game top-flight season. Arsenal has been dominant against teams at the bottom of the table, winning all seven matches against such opponents this season.

The probability of an Arsenal victory stands at 69.1%, while Southampton has only a 12.7% chance of winning according to Opta statistics.

As both teams prepare for their final matchday clash, Arsenal aims to maintain their strong form against lower-ranked teams while Southampton hopes to avoid setting an unwanted record for losses in a single season.
