Arsenal's Mariona Caldentey Wins Inaugural WSL Player Of The Season Award

Mariona Caldentey has been awarded the WSL Player of the Season at the inaugural Women's Professional Game Awards, recognising her outstanding contributions to Arsenal this season.

Arsenal's Mariona Caldentey has been honoured as the Women's Super League Player of the Season at the inaugural Women's Professional Game Awards. This event, organised by the Women's Professional Leagues Limited, is a pioneering ceremony recognising achievements in the WSL and Women's Championship. The awards were determined by votes from the Football Writers' Association and Football Supporters' Association, with Caldentey being the first to receive this prestigious accolade.

Caldentey's performance this season has been remarkable. She participated in 21 out of Arsenal's 22 league matches, scoring nine goals and surpassing her expected goals (xG) by 2.69. Additionally, she provided five assists, showcasing her all-around contribution to the team. Her most recent goal was crucial in a thrilling 4-3 win over Manchester United on the final day of the season.

Caldentey Wins WSL Player of the Season Award

The Spanish international joined Arsenal from Barcelona in July last year and quickly became a key player. She played more minutes than any other Arsenal player this season, totalling 1,774 minutes on the pitch. Caldentey also ranks second in creating big chances in the WSL with 13, just behind her teammate Katie McCabe who created 16.

Caldentey's impact extended beyond domestic competitions as she excelled in Europe too. She scored seven goals during Arsenal's journey to the final where they are set to face Barcelona on May 24. Her performances have been pivotal in both league and European competitions.

At the same awards ceremony, Manchester City's Vivianne Miedema was awarded Goal of the Season for her strike against Aston Villa. Meanwhile, West Ham United's Shekira Martinez received recognition as Rising Star after netting ten goals in twelve appearances. Martinez finished joint-second in the Golden Boot race alongside Alessia Russo and Khadija Shaw who both scored twelve goals this season.

Caldentey's achievements highlight her exceptional talent and dedication throughout this season. Her contributions have not only been vital for Arsenal but have also earned her well-deserved recognition at these prestigious awards.
