Arsenal and Mikel Arteta asked for observations following VAR criticism

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta remained resolute in his and the team's critique of Premier League referees, despite a request for inquiry by the Football Association into the widespread condemnation after Arsenal's recent defeat to Newcastle.

Arsenal were beaten by a solitary goal at St James' Park, marking their inaugural loss of the season, courtesy of a contentious goal scored by Anthony Gordon for the home side.

The deciding goal of the second half was scrutinized for three potential VAR infringements- the ball moving out of bounds, a supposed foul by Joelinton on Gabriel Magalhaes from Arsenal, and a probable offside- all of which were dismissed, securing the victory and three points for Newcastle.

As per reports, Mikel Arteta and Arsenal could potentially face charges from the Football Association (FA). This follows the FA's request to the manager and club for their accounts regarding the issue at hand.

The club has a three business day window to provide a response prior to the FA determining if there will be any further course of action. They could simply drop the matter, give Arsenal a reminder of their duties, formally warn them, or proceed with a charge.

Arsenal is at risk of violating FA Rule E3.1, pertaining to media conversations. Nevertheless, there is no explicit punishment in the event that the club is found culpable.

Mikel Arteta labelled the decision as 'embarrassing' and 'disgrace', and the club followed an official statement soon in support of their manager.

Arsenal's statement claimed "yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors" occurred during the loss at Newcastle as the club "wholeheartedly supports" Arteta's comments, stating players, coaches and supporters "deserve better".

The Gunners are in action on Wednesday as they play Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League at the Emirates Stadium.
