Arsenal, the 2023-24 Premier League runners-up, have made a significant statement in the transfer market by securing the services of Italy and Bologna star Riccardo Calafiori for £42 million.
The Italian defender, who shone brightly in Serie A last season and delivered standout performances in Euro 2024, is set to bolster Mikel Arteta's squad as they prepare for another title challenge.

Next on Arsenal's radar is Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino. The 28-year-old Spanish international has been a standout performer for both club and country over the past year, playing a key role in Spain's UEFA Euro 2024 triumph.
With Arsenal needing a quality midfield controller to potentially replace Jorginho and Thomas Partey, Merino is seen as an ideal fit. It is reported that personal terms have already been agreed upon with Merino, but the transfer fee between the clubs is yet to be finalized.
Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres also linked
Another priority for Arteta is to strengthen the striker position. Arteta is keen to add more competition for Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, as he does not believe the current pair are prolific enough to lead Arsenal to Premier League glory.
Arsenal have reportedly been in contact with Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres. The Swedish forward had an outstanding season, scoring 43 goals in 50 games for Sporting following his move from Coventry for £20 million. Arteta views the 26-year-old as a potential mainstay in Arsenal's attack.
However, Gyokeres' €100 million release clause poses a challenge, although it is understood that Sporting might be willing to negotiate a fee around €70 million.
The potential acquisition of Gyokeres could hinge on the departures of Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson, who have attracted interest from clubs in England and France. Should these moves materialize, it would pave the way for Gyokeres to join the North London side.
