Arsenal have secured the signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for nearly £60 million. The midfielder, who is 26 years old, was anticipated to join the Emirates Stadium as Mikel Arteta aims to bolster his midfield after finishing second in the Premier League three times in a row.
Zubimendi's journey began at La Real's youth academy, where he progressed to make 236 appearances over six years with the first team. He played a crucial role alongside Mikel Merino in winning the Copa del Rey in the 2019-20 season and helped Real Sociedad secure a Champions League spot by finishing fourth in LaLiga during the 2022-23 season.

In his previous season, Zubimendi attempted 1,752 passes and completed 1,479 of them, with 321 reaching the final third. These figures were team-highs for Real Sociedad, who finished 11th. Only Takefusa Kubo surpassed him with 326 successful passes into the final third. Defensively, Zubimendi ranked among the top central midfielders in LaLiga for ground and aerial duel success rates.
Arsenal did not disclose specific details about Zubimendi's contract but confirmed it is a long-term agreement. On joining Arsenal, Zubimendi expressed his excitement: "This is a huge moment in my career. It's the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are."
Mikel Arteta praised Zubimendi's qualities: "Martin will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team. He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us." Arteta also highlighted Zubimendi's consistent performance levels for both club and country as reasons for their excitement about his arrival.
Zubimendi turned down an offer from Liverpool last year after being part of Spain's victorious squad at Euro 2024 under Luis de la Fuente. His decision reflects his belief that Arsenal's playing style suits him well and that they have shown great potential recently.
The midfielder could make his Premier League debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford on August 17 when Arsenal start their 2025-26 campaign. This match will be an opportunity for Zubimendi to showcase his skills on one of football’s biggest stages.
Arteta warmly welcomed Martin and his family to the club, expressing confidence that he would become an integral part of their future success. The addition of Zubimendi is seen as a strategic move to enhance Arsenal’s midfield strength.
