Arsenal Squad Depth Key To Navigating A Busy Schedule, Arteta Warns

Mikel Arteta emphasises Arsenal's squad depth as crucial to managing a demanding start to 2026. With nine fixtures in January across domestic and European competitions, the manager highlights mustering fresh options and optimal fitness to maintain form while injuries and absences are managed.

Arsenal stay top of the Premier League after a 2-1 victory over Brighton, yet Mikel Arteta is already looking ahead to a demanding run of fixtures. Arteta described the upcoming Arsenal schedule as a test, but one the squad intends to handle.

The win at Emirates Stadium kept Arsenal ahead of both Manchester City and Aston Villa, with Villa next to visit north London on Tuesday. That match closes the 2025 calendar year for Arsenal before the Arsenal schedule intensifies further in January.

Arsenal Squad Depth Key in Busy Schedule

January 2026 is set to be packed, with nine games listed on the Arsenal schedule. The club will face Liverpool and Manchester United in the league, play the first leg of an EFL Cup semi-final at Chelsea, and meet Inter in the Champions League.

Despite Manchester City and Aston Villa staying close in the title race, Arteta stressed that attention stays on internal standards. Arteta said: "We can only control what we do, and we are doing a lot of good things that I think we have to improve as well to have the margins better," reflecting that focus on performance.

Squad availability remains central to how Arsenal handle the coming Arsenal schedule. Gabriel Magalhaes returned from the bench against Brighton earlier than expected, while Jurrien Timber did not feature and Riccardo Calafiori suffered an injury setback during the warm-up before the match.

Arteta highlighted the need for more options to keep the group ready for the Arsenal schedule. "We need more players back as well to have better options and maintain the team very, very fresh. Every three days is going to be a challenge, and we are up for it."

Arteta reflected on the season’s physical demands so far within the Arsenal schedule. "At the moment, we've survived six months. So, let's see, there's another five-and-a-half to go. So, hopefully, things will get better." That comment underlined both fatigue and optimism inside the camp.

The head coach also praised Gabriel Magalhaes and the club’s medical team after the defender’s early return, which will help navigate the Arsenal schedule. "The good news as well, for example, we got Gabi earlier than expected, which is great. The medical staff,I think they've done an incredible job with the way he pushes himself as well. That's what we need because we lost one, and we got somebody else back."

Arsenal’s strong home form gives confidence ahead of the heavy Arsenal schedule. The team have taken nine wins and one draw from their last 10 Premier League home matches, including six straight victories. It is their best home winning run since a sequence of 10 between April and December 2022.

Arteta expressed satisfaction with the display against Brighton, who provided firm opposition ahead of the tougher Arsenal schedule. "Overall, I think the performance was, against a really good side, very, very good." With key players returning and results holding, Arsenal enter 2026 leading the league yet facing a demanding stretch.
