Mikel Arteta expressed dissatisfaction with Arsenal's defensive performance during their 1-1 draw against Chelsea. Pedro Neto scored from a distance at Stamford Bridge, equalising 10 minutes after Gabriel Martinelli had given Arsenal the lead. Leandro Trossard missed a late opportunity, leaving Arteta visibly frustrated on the sidelines. Despite Arsenal's dominance, Arteta criticised the defence for allowing Neto's goal.
Arteta highlighted his disappointment with Arsenal's defensive lapse leading to Chelsea's equaliser. He stated, "The disappointment of not getting three points is bigger [than being satisfied] and it will probably be bigger after watching it back." He emphasised that Arsenal were the better team in many phases but failed to maintain their standards defensively.

Arteta pointed out that the team was disorganised during the second phase of a set piece, allowing Neto to score. He stressed that such defensive errors are unacceptable and do not meet Arsenal's standards. The manager acknowledged Neto's quality but insisted that Arsenal should have defended better.
Arsenal have now gone four Premier League games without a win for the first time since April 2023. They had previously secured victories in 21 of their last 25 league matches. This season, Arsenal have faced 15 or more shots in four Premier League games, double the number from the entire previous campaign.
Despite these challenges, Arteta found some positives in Martin Odegaard's return to fitness. Odegaard assisted Martinelli and played his first match since September. Arteta praised Odegaard's leadership and character, noting how his presence improved the team's flow and energy.
Declan Rice also returned to action despite injury concerns, having missed a recent Champions League match against Inter. Arteta commended Rice for playing through difficulties and contributing to the team's efforts. The manager noted that despite ongoing issues, the team has shown remarkable energy and spirit.
The draw left Arsenal in fourth place in the Premier League standings, trailing leaders Liverpool by nine points as they head into the final international break of 2024. Despite recent setbacks, Arteta remains focused on improving team performance and addressing defensive weaknesses.
