Arsenal: Three Matches which Took the Title Away from the Gunners

Arsenal's dream of ending a two-decade-long league drought remains unfulfilled as the Gunners lost the race for the Premier League against Manchester City.

Despite a 2-1 win over Everton on the final day, the Gunners finished 2nd with 89 points, two points behind winners Manchester City, who won their fourth consecutive title.

Arsenal

Mikel Arteta's men have made some serious forward steps this season, as they pushed Pep Guardiola's team all the way. It was a neck-and-neck title race and the Arsenal players will be extremely heartbroken as they couldn't get over the line.

Arsenal have made giant strides in the right direction with Mikel Arteta at the helm. The quality of the team has been excellent, and along with that, the mentality and the resilience have taken them forward big time. Although the North London club missed out on the league title narrowly for the second season running, they will be coming back for more in the coming years.

But in hindsight, the Gooners across the world will be thinking about the missed opportunities, which led to their displacement from the summit spot. Although the most recent failure will be pointed out as the telling factor, we could find out three matches which dented a big blow in Arsenal's title hopes.

Arsenal 2-2 Fulham

Arsenal conceded a goal early in the match as Andreas Pereira scored for Fulham. Bukayo Saka scored from the spot to equalize, and then Eddie Nketiah gave the Gunners the lead within a span of two minutes. Fulham were then down to Ten men, but three minutes from, Joao Palhinha stunned the Emirates crowd with a goal from a corner. That's how Arsenal dropped their first points of the season.

Arsenal 0-2 West Ham

A struggling West Ham side stunned Arsenal at the Emirates again. Tomas Soucek scored an early goal, which was then doubled by former Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos. The Emirates were expecting another epic comeback, but that sadly didn't happen for the boys as it was the first of Arsenal's two consecutive league defeats.

Arsenal 0-2 Aston Villa

Mikel Arteta's immediate predecessor Unai Emery played a massive part in Arsenal's fate this season. Aston Villa won their home match against Arsenal, and then came on to bite them at the Emirates. Two late goals from Leon Bailey and Olly Watkins pinned the Gunners down at home, and gave them the biggest blow in the title run.

The Gunners ended up winning 28 matches in the league this season, the most in their history. They suffered 5 defeats and drew 5 matches. As the next season approaches, the North London club will be hoping to take the charge again, and this time, they will be equipped with more belief and experience which can propel them towards the elusive title.
