Arsenal eased past AC Milan to reach the Europa League quarters

Nyon, March 16: Europa League favourites Arsenal and Atletico Madrid have been kept apart in the quarter-finals, having been drawn against CSKA Moscow and Sporting CP respectively. Arsene Wenger's side thrashed AC Milan 5-1 on aggregate in the last 16, sending out a real statement to all those left in the competition. Atletico enjoyed a similarly straightforward passage, with their 5-1 second-leg win away at Lokomotiv Moscow wrapping up an emphatic 8-1 triumph.

The first-leg matches will take place on April 5, with the return games scheduled for a week later.

Both sides will expect tough ties, particularly given the lengthy journey to Moscow facing Arsenal, but they and Atletico will still be expected to progress.

RB Leipzig are enjoying a strong showing in their maiden season in European football and will come up against stalwarts Marseille, who beat Athletic Bilbao 5-2 over two legs.

And Borussia Dortmund's conquerors Red Bull Salzburg will take on Lazio, who could be considered dark horses given their position of fourth in Serie A.

Wenger hails Arsenal's mental strength after 'nightmare week'

Welbeck struck a controversial penalty to equalise for Arsenal at the stroke of half-time at the Emirates. Gianluigi Donnarumma then committed a goalkeeping gaffe, allowing Granit Xhaka's long-ranger to sneak in to hand Arsenal the advantage. Welbeck headed in from point-blank range to make it 3-1 and oust Milan 5-1 on aggregate.

The big shock though was the ouster of Borussia Dortmund.

Although Salzburg were unbeaten since August, Dortmund were expected to pull through. The Austrian side took a 2-1 lead in Dortmund through Valon Berisha's double. This time, the match ended in a stalemate. Goalkeepers Alexander Walke and Roman Burki were tested amid cries of racism by Dortmund striker Mitchy Batshuayi, who has been loaned to the club by Chelsea.

As for Atletico, Angel Correa gave the Spanish side the lead on the night.
Lokomotiv levelled but Saul Niguez restored their advantage before Fernando Torres scored a double, one of which was a penalty-kick. Substitute Antoine Griezmann completed the scoring.
