Arsenal Women Rally To 3-1 Win Over OH Leuven, Securing 7-1 Aggregate To Face Chelsea In UWCL Quarter-Finals

Arsenal Women defeated OH Leuven 3-1 in the second leg, achieving a 7-1 aggregate win and earning a Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea. Alessia Russo struck twice, showcasing Arsenal's dominance as they extended their UWCL knockout-run and maintained momentum ahead of a high-profile clash.

Arsenal confirmed a Champions League quarter-final tie with Chelsea after defeating OH Leuven 3-1 at Meadow Park, securing a 7-1 aggregate win. Alessia Russo scored twice, with Mariona Caldentey adding a penalty, as Arsenal navigated a damp surface and brief pressure from Leuven to extend an already commanding advantage from the first leg.

The foundation for this progress was laid a week earlier, when Renee Slegers’ team overwhelmed Leuven 4-0 in the opening play-off encounter. That emphatic away result meant Arsenal entered the return leg with a strong cushion and, realistically, could already start preparing for a meeting against Women’s Super League rivals Chelsea in the last eight.

Arsenal Women into UWCL quarters

Leuven started with intent on 18 February 2026, creating an early scare when Jada Conijnenberg broke through, only for Daphne van Domselaar to block with an outstretched leg. At the other end, Caitlin Foord volleyed over on the slick pitch, snatching at a difficult bouncing chance in challenging conditions.

Arsenal’s breakthrough arrived soon after those early exchanges, when Russo drifted away from a marker inside the box. A low right-footed shot beat goalkeeper Lowiese Seynhaeve, who appeared disappointed with the attempt to save, as the ball slipped underneath and gave Arsenal a 1-0 lead on the night.

Leuven reacted well and were rewarded close to the half-hour mark through Sara Pusztai. The midfielder finished calmly from Kim Everaerts’s pass, though the goal stood only after VAR intervention overturned an original offside flag. That equaliser briefly unsettled Arsenal, with Leuven sensing a chance to test the aggregate margin.

Slegers’ side gradually regained control after the setback, pushing Leuven deeper and limiting attacks. Smilla Holmberg forced Seynhaeve into an excellent stop soon after the interval, driving a powerful strike that required a strong hand. Leuven’s resistance then faltered when Linde Veefkind brought down Foord inside the area, leading to a decisive second goal.

Caldentey stepped up for the 65th-minute penalty and sent Seynhaeve the wrong way, restoring Arsenal’s advantage on the night. Russo almost extended the lead immediately, but a sharp one-handed save denied a second goal. Russo would not be kept out, though, finishing low in stoppage time to complete a brace and close out a routine victory.

Arsenal Champions League quarter-finals context and data debrief

Russo’s late strike confirmed Arsenal’s passage to a 17th Champions League quarter-final, more than any other club has achieved. This tie also marked the first time since the 2019-20 round of 16 against Slavia Prague that Arsenal won both legs of a European knockout tie, following 5-2 away and 8-0 home victories in that earlier campaign.

The numbers underlined Arsenal’s superiority, with Slegers’ players creating clearer chances across both matches. Arsenal finished this second leg with 2.32 expected goals (xG), compared with Leuven’s 1.02. That gap reflected sustained attacking pressure, while Leuven’s limited output highlighted how rarely Arsenal allowed dangerous opportunities across the tie.

Elsewhere in the competition, the quarter-final draw paired Barcelona with Real Madrid in a high-profile Clasico meeting. Real Madrid advanced 5-2 on aggregate after defeating Paris FC 2-0 earlier on Wednesday, adding another major storyline to a last-eight line-up that also features the all-English clash between Arsenal and Chelsea.

The result at Meadow Park completed a controlled two-leg performance from Arsenal, who balanced attacking intent with relative defensive security. With Russo in confident form, Caldentey contributing from the spot and Foord heavily involved, Slegers can now focus on preparing for Chelsea, knowing this squad again reached the Champions League quarter-finals with authority.
