Arsenal Women Lead WSL Title Chase After 7-0 Thrashing Of Leicester

Arsenal keep the Women’s Super League title race alive after a 7-0 win over Leicester City, cutting into Manchester City’s lead and raising pressure before the final weeks. The result also reflects Arsenal’s strong momentum across competitions, with confidence growing during a demanding end to the season.

Manchester City still control the race, with two league matches left and a five-point target to secure a first Women’s Super League crown since 2016. Arsenal remain third on 41 points, eight behind City and two short of Chelsea, but also hold two games in hand.

Opta’s supercomputer continues to rate Manchester City as heavy favourites for the championship. City are assigned a 92.5% chance of finishing top, while Arsenal’s probability stands at 7.5%. Those numbers underline the scale of Arsenal’s task, despite recent form and the extra fixtures still available.

Arsenal are also 2-1 ahead against Lyon after the first leg of their Women’s Champions League semi-final, which adds to a crowded calendar. Yet the squad appear energised by the challenge. "We like to be in a hunting position, midfielder Frida Maanum said. We are in a good position, we want to hunt [City] from the back and try to catch them."

Manchester City’s situation shifted when a 3-2 defeat to Brighton last weekend cut their cushion at the top. Arsenal used one of their games in hand on Wednesday to dismantle struggling Leicester City, with seven goals shared around the squad to underline attacking depth and flexibility.

Asked about overturning City’s advantage, Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers stayed cautious. "I don’t know," Arsenal boss Renee Slegers replied when asked if her team could close the gap. "We have nothing yet so we have to keep on pushing." That outlook reflects an emphasis on performance rather than calculations.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Slegers said: "Clean sheet, seven goals scored, different scorers - it was a great night for us. You saw so many players playing the Arsenal way, we played attractive football and we were very brave in everything we did. Everyone knows their role and brings their strengths. There are such high levels of communication and trust within the team, on the pitch, off the pitch."

With City still leading and Chelsea also in contention, Arsenal’s pursuit depends on maintaining this level while capitalising on every remaining game.
