Rice And Raya Signings Propel Arsenal To A New Level, Arteta Indicates

Arsenal stand on the verge of a historic season, having just secured the Premier League title and now preparing for a Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday. The trophy ended a long wait since Arsene Wenger’s 2003-04 Invincibles, with Arsenal finishing seven points clear of Manchester City after three straight campaigns as runners-up.

The latest triumph is Arsenal’s fourth Premier League-era crown and comes with a chance to complete a rare league and European double. Only Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City have previously combined a First Division or Premier League title with a European Cup or Champions League victory in the same season.

Rice and Raya lift Arsenal, says Arteta

Arsenal’s possible double would place the club in select company in English football history. Liverpool managed it in 1976-77 and 1983-84, Manchester United followed in 1998-99 and 2007-08, while Manchester City achieved the feat in 2022-23. Arsenal now have an opportunity to join that group if they overcome defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Central to Arsenal’s Premier League success has been Declan Rice, who joined from West Ham in a club-record £100m transfer in 2023. Since signing, Rice has led Arsenal’s midfielders in interceptions, passes, recoveries, touches and carries in the Premier League, underlining the scale of influence across three seasons.

Arteta described Rice’s arrival as a turning point for Arsenal’s project and status. The manager believed the deal underlined a new level of ambition, both on the pitch and in the transfer market. The move also sent a clear signal to rivals that Arsenal were prepared to invest heavily in the squad’s core.

"It was a big moment, Arteta told The Overlap, recalling the signing of Rice.We were constantly sending messages, whether we want him or not. To the people in the organisation, to the supporters, to our opponents, that was a strong message. [It said] we are here to go to another level. We are on another level financially, we are on another level with the ambition of the players we recruited, the profile of the players. A big club needs to make that sort of statement."

Arsenal Premier League evolution and David Raya’s impact

Alongside Rice, the decision to bring in David Raya changed the dynamics of Arsenal’s defence. Raya initially joined on loan from Brentford before completing a permanent switch and replacing Aaron Ramsdale as first-choice goalkeeper. The call drew debate at the time but has since been backed by Raya winning the Golden Glove in three straight seasons.

Arteta accepted that dropping Ramsdale, who had performed well, was not easy to justify publicly or internally. However, Arteta felt Arsenal needed a goalkeeper with a different profile to reach the level required for consistent title challenges and deep European runs. Edu’s role became crucial as sporting director in supporting the decision with the club’s hierarchy.

"That's a good example of what a manager needs, Arteta said. I was very convinced that we had to make a change. Not because Aaron didn't have the quality, but because I believed to go to the next level, we needed a different profile of goalkeeper. It was very difficult to explain, difficult to explain upstairs, externally. It could maybe not make sense. That's when you need a sporting director, in this case, Edu, to say, 'Mikel, are you 100% sure?' I went through it with him again and again. 'You know you're going to have an issue'. I know. 'Mikel, you're going to expose yourself'.I know. 'You really want to do this?' Yes, please do. Edu really convinced the board because they needed to be convinced and to understand. It's not, 'Mikel says this, okay, let's do it.' It doesn't work like this. I wasn't sure if it was going to work or not, but [I knew] David was going to present himself and dedicate himself to the cause, and he was going to be an incredible ambassador for the club. I was sure."

Arteta admitted there was uncertainty over exactly how Raya would settle but stressed faith in Raya’s attitude and professionalism. The goalkeeper’s performances and awards have since backed the judgement, supporting Arsenal’s broader strategy of bold recruitment moves. Those decisions now sit behind a Premier League title and a chance for an Arsenal Champions League win.
