Arsene Wenger emerges favourite to become the next England manager

London, June 29: The Football Association is all set to find a fresh replacement of former England manager Roy Hodgson who resigned immediately after the team's exit from Euro 2016. Iceland defeated England 2-1 to knock them out of the tournament from the round of 16.

Media reports suggest, The FA is considering current Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as possible long-term replacement of Hodgson at the helm of affairs. Wenger is currently serving the last year of his contract at the Emirates which by next year the Frenchman is free to go anywhere he wants.

The FA Chief Executive, Martin Glenn had clarified their intentions of getting a proper long-term manager who can guide England to glory in future. Well if Wenger becomes eligible, who better can fill the vacant English manager's role!

Martin Glenn addressed the media recently and said: "We'd like to get one in (a manager) for the first World Cup qualifier, but if we won't we have an interim plan in mind."

England U21 manager Gareth Southgate might get promoted to the senior team as he is being considered as the caretaker manager.

On Southgate's possible appointment Glenn said: "We are not talking about names today but it would be a pretty obvious one to pick.

"For such an important decision, we are prepared to wait. If someone was coming to the end of their contract at the end of the season then waiting is a possibility.

"Of course, if you said, this person is an absolute shoo-in, can you wait, then we are well placed with an interim solution.

"It is such an important decision. We have got to get the right person. To wait a few months - if that is what we had to do - would be the right decision.

"We just don't know yet who the runners and riders would be. We are going to scope out, which we start at the end of this week with David Gill and Dan (Ashworth).

"We clearly need an inspirational manager who can harness all of the resources that the English game has."

Martin Glenn further added: "I will sit down with David (Gill) at the end of the week. We are going to canvas opinion across the game. It's an important appointment and we've obviously got to get it right. We kick the process off with the three (of us).

"You'll have 55 different opinions in this room about who should be manager, but we are going to use the opinions and wisdom and insight of current managers, former managers and players."

Yesterday (June 28), former English striker Alan Shearer had showed his urge to become the next England manager. It is up to the FA to take a proper final call. If Arsene Wenger actually takes up the job it will be huge boost for the England national team as well an end of an era at Arsenal.
