Arteta Acknowledges Newcastle United's Superior Efficiency In EFL Cup Semi-Final Against Arsenal

Mikel Arteta conceded that Newcastle United were more efficient than Arsenal following their EFL Cup semi-final exit. Despite a strong start, Arsenal failed to capitalise on opportunities and were ultimately defeated.

Mikel Arteta admitted that Newcastle United outperformed Arsenal in their EFL Cup semi-final clash. The Gunners were defeated 4-0 on aggregate, with Newcastle winning 2-0 in the second leg to reach their second final in three years. Arsenal, trailing 2-0 from the first leg, started strongly at St James' Park, but Martin Odegaard's shot hit the post.

Newcastle quickly extended their lead when Jacob Murphy scored within a minute, and Anthony Gordon sealed the victory after halftime. Arsenal managed only three shots on target throughout the match, with an expected goals (xG) of just 0.94 compared to Newcastle's 1.71. Arteta acknowledged that his team needed to create more opportunities.

Arteta Recognises Newcastle's Efficiency Over Arsenal

"We had so many expectations, obviously, to believe that we could turn it around," said Arteta. "We had momentum in the first half and didn't capitalise. They scored immediately after [Odegaard hit the post] and the momentum shifts." He added that they needed an early goal in the second half but failed to achieve it.

Arteta highlighted Newcastle's efficiency as a key factor in their victory. "They have been more efficient than us in the boxes, and that is the difference in the tie," he stated. He emphasised that being efficient is crucial for winning trophies, which Arsenal lacked on this occasion.

The manager expressed disappointment at not reaching the final and acknowledged it as a missed opportunity. "We need to swallow this one; it is a tough one," he remarked. Despite knowing the challenge ahead due to their first-leg result, Arteta stressed there was nothing more they could do now.

Errors and Injuries Add to Arsenal's Woes

Newcastle's second goal came from a mistake by David Raya, who passed to Declan Rice near their penalty area. Fabian Schar intercepted before Gordon scored calmly. Arteta noted that errors are part of football but admitted they gave Newcastle hope by playing long balls into vulnerable areas.

Adding to Arsenal's troubles was Gabriel Martinelli's injury during the match. "He felt something; I think it was his hamstring," explained Arteta. Martinelli couldn't continue playing, and an MRI scan was planned for further assessment.

Despite this setback, Arteta remains focused on future challenges as Arsenal prepares for upcoming matches while recuperating in Dubai.
