Mikel Arteta believes Riccardo Calafiori will significantly enhance Arsenal's chances of winning the Premier League this season. The 22-year-old defender, who transferred from Bologna for a reported £42 million, made his debut in Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Lyon at the Emirates. Calafiori replaced Oleksandr Zinchenko just after the hour mark, marking his first appearance since Euro 2024.
Arteta praised Calafiori's versatility, noting that he can play in multiple positions and contribute both defensively and offensively. "He brings a lot of versatility because he can play in two or three different positions and especially in attack, he can occupy different spaces because he's a real defender," Arteta said. "When you see his presence, his physicality, how he goes to the duels, he's unbelievable."

Arsenal have shown significant defensive improvement under Arteta, conceding the fewest goals in the Premier League last season with just 29. Calafiori is expected to bolster this already strong defense while also adding depth to their attacking options.
Both Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jurrien Timber were absent from the Emirates Cup win, but Arteta remains optimistic about their return. "It's fine," Arteta said regarding Timber. "He's been doing some individual work, that's clear now. So we expect him to be ready to train with the group in the next week because he has no reaction."
However, Tomiyasu's recovery will take longer. "I think it will take weeks on that one unfortunately," Arteta added about Tomiyasu's fitness. "He's going to have to be patient and work through it because I think it's going to take a few weeks."
The Gunners are set to begin their Premier League campaign next Saturday against Wolves at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal have not lost to Wolves at home since 2020, adding an extra layer of confidence as they aim for their first league title in a decade.
Arteta is confident that Calafiori will make a substantial impact on the team. "Obviously, he's done a lot last year and I think he's a player that can improve us," Arteta stated. "We are managing them; it's a lot of new things for him. It's a big step up, but he's so willing as you could see for the 20 minutes that he played; he's so energetic, so passionate, a really intelligent player."
Arteta concluded by highlighting Calafiori's potential: "He's going to give us a lot." The manager’s confidence in his new signing reflects Arsenal’s ambition for the upcoming season.
