Arteta Urges Arsenal Defenders To Step Up Following Gabriel Injury Ahead Of Key Fixtures

Mikel Arteta has called on his Arsenal defenders to rise to the challenge after Gabriel Magalhaes' injury. With crucial matches approaching, he emphasises the need for strong performances from replacements.

Mikel Arteta has called on Arsenal's defenders to step up following Gabriel Magalhaes' injury. The centre-back was injured during Brazil's friendly against Senegal at the Emirates Stadium. This means he will miss the north London derby on Sunday. Gabriel will also be absent for crucial matches against Bayern Munich and Chelsea as Arsenal aims to maintain their strong season start.

Gabriel, aged 27, has been pivotal for Arsenal, winning 63 duels in the Premier League, tied with Jurrien Timber. He has also contributed directly to five goals across all competitions this season. Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera are likely to fill Gabriel's spot in defence. Arteta is keen for them to seize this opportunity.

Arteta Calls for Defensive Resilience After Injury

Arteta expressed his concerns about Gabriel's absence: "Gabriel has unfortunately picked up an injury with Brazil and he's going to be out for weeks," said Arteta. "We need to have another scan, I think on Wednesday, then we will have the timeline much more clear than we have at the moment."

Arsenal has a strong record against Tottenham, winning five of their last six Premier League encounters (D1), including three consecutive victories. This marks their longest winning streak against Spurs since a run between January 1987 and January 1989. A win on Sunday could see Arsenal extend their lead at the top of the league by seven points.

Arteta is excited about the upcoming derby: "It is different. This is a big city and a big rivalry for a part of London that we want to conquer," Arteta added. "They want to do the same."

The manager emphasised the significance of playing at home: "It's just beautiful, especially when we play at home in front of our people." He acknowledged the energy both fans and players bring to such matches.

Arteta concluded by highlighting the privilege of participating in such fixtures: "It's a privilege to play in this kind of game so we cannot wait to get to Sunday."
