Mikel Arteta is confident that Viktor Gyokeres will quickly adapt to Arsenal's style after his first start, despite a subdued performance against Villarreal. Gyokeres transferred from Sporting CP for approximately £63.5 million, including add-ons, at the end of last month. His debut came during a pre-season friendly at the Emirates Stadium, where Villarreal secured a 3-2 victory.
Arteta believes Gyokeres will integrate smoothly into the team once he adjusts to their requirements. "Well we already break that line today because I think it was important for him to start a match," Arteta stated post-match. "I really saw a lot of things, a lot of purpose. In general, for a lot of players who haven't had a lot of minutes, it's good."

Despite not scoring on his full debut, Gyokeres had an opportunity but shot directly at Luiz Junior in Villarreal's goal. This was uncharacteristic given his prolific record in Portugal's Primeira Liga, where he netted 68 goals over two seasons. His goals exceeded expectations by 14.4, based on expected goals (xG) metrics.
The Swedish international struggled to make an impact against Villarreal, with only 14 touches and four completed passes before being substituted in the 63rd minute. Nevertheless, Arteta remains optimistic about Gyokeres' future contributions to the team.
Noni Madueke also made his first appearance for Arsenal after joining from Chelsea. Arteta praised Madueke's eagerness to join Arsenal and noted the positive reception he received from fans. "He showed a lot of desire to come and join us from day one," Arteta commented on Madueke's commitment.
Max Dowman continued to impress by winning another penalty for Martin Odegaard's successful spot-kick in the 74th minute. The 15-year-old previously won a penalty against Newcastle United earlier in pre-season and is seen as a promising talent from Arsenal's academy.
Arteta compared Dowman's rapid rise to that of Ethan Nwaneri but stressed the importance of managing his development carefully. "The most similar one was Ethan," Arteta said, noting that Dowman's progress has been swift since training with the first team last year.
Arteta mentioned that Dowman would take a short break as he hasn't had any holidays recently. This pause aims to ensure he returns refreshed and ready for future challenges with Arsenal.
The upcoming season holds promise for Arsenal with new signings like Gyokeres and Madueke poised to make significant contributions once fully integrated into the squad. Meanwhile, young talents like Dowman continue to show potential under careful guidance from Arteta and his coaching staff.
