Arsenal's manager, Mikel Arteta, expressed disappointment over his team's poor start against Liverpool. Despite managing a 2-2 draw and playing with ten men, Arsenal struggled initially. The match at Anfield began with Arsenal honouring Liverpool's Premier League victory. However, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz scored swiftly within 87 seconds during the first half.
Arteta acknowledged that the team's performance in the opening 20 minutes was subpar. "What we did in the first half, the first 20 minutes, was nowhere near the level," Arteta told Sky Sports. "So, to do it after, it's too late. We reacted, great. But those 20 minutes were unacceptable." He emphasised that responsibility lay with him and not just the players.

After halftime, Arsenal showed improvement. Gabriel Martinelli netted a goal two minutes into the second half. Later, Mikel Merino equalised in the 70th minute with a header assisted by Trent Alexander-Arnold's positioning. Unfortunately for Arsenal, Merino received a red card nine minutes later for a second bookable offence.
This match marked Arsenal's first comeback from a two-goal deficit since March 2021 against West Ham. However, their recent form has been lacklustre with only three wins in their last 11 league games (D6 L2). Arteta stressed that their slow start wasn't due to their midweek Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
Arteta highlighted that despite being winless in five matches across all competitions and exiting the Champions League semi-finals, excuses weren't acceptable. "Regardless of all the excuses... look at what we can do when we're there," he stated. He insisted on focusing on basics rather than extraordinary feats.
The manager also noted that Arsenal had played with ten men six times this season due to red cards. This statistic reflects ongoing discipline issues within the team. Arteta believes addressing these fundamental aspects is crucial for future success.
Arteta emphasised that competing for trophies requires consistent performance levels. "Then you don't have to be fighting for trophies," he added about maintaining high standards regardless of winning or losing silverware.
He pointed out that several teams aim for Champions League qualification before considering trophy pursuits next season. Arteta stressed doing simple things well as key to dominating matches rather than relying solely on individual brilliance.
The match ended with Andy Robertson's late goal disallowed, allowing Arsenal to secure a valuable point despite challenges faced throughout the game.
